“I have played against many world-class defenders before but ONE Arsenal defender gave me the toughest game of my life, I will never forget it even in a hurry ”: Harry Kane names ONE Arsenal’s defender as the most difficult opening he has ever faced

Posted on December 12, 2025 by boss

Harry Kane’s career has long been intertwined with the narratives of North London football.

As Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer and a player who built his Premier League legacy at Spurs, many Arsenal supporters often joke that Kane is the “least likely” footballer to offer compliments to their players.

Yet football, in its modern landscape, has increasingly blurred the lines of club rivalries. That spirit was evident when Kane recently praised Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice — even though he has never directly singled out an Arsenal defender for public praise.

Over the years, Kane has faced several generations of Arsenal defenders, from Laurent Koscielny to William Saliba. Despite many hard-fought North London derbies, there has been no widely recorded interview or media statementin which Kane explicitly commended an Arsenal centre-back or full-back.

This isn’t surprising, given the fierce competitive rivalry between the two clubs and the role Kane played as their symbolic opponent. Instead, his comments regarding Arsenal have typically centered around team performance, tactical expectations, or derby mentality.

However, ahead of Bayern Munich’s Champions League clash with Arsenal, Kane did offer a notable compliment — directed at Declan Rice, describing him as “fantastic” and praising his impact since joining the Gunners. Rice’s influence on the team, especially his defensive midfield work, ball recovery, and leadership, has earned him praise across Europe, even from players with strong ties to rival clubs such as Kane.

While Rice is not a defender in the strict sense, his hybrid role — shielding the back line, orchestrating defensive transitions, and covering large areas of the pitch — means his contributions often overlap with defensive responsibilities. For Kane to publicly highlight Rice’s importance demonstrates a genuine appreciation for quality, regardless of club affiliations.
