“Although Martin Odegaard did his best but our newly appointed captain will surely lead us to glories this season, I’m sure”: Bukayo Saka says the new club’s captain will lead the club to win trophies this season

Posted on December 16, 2025 by boss

Bukayo Saka has publicly and privately made his admiration clear for Arsenal’s potential new captain, with Declan Rice widely viewed as the leading candidate to take on the armband should Mikel Arteta decide to make a change.

For Saka, who has grown into one of the club’s most influential figures despite his young age, leadership is not only about wearing the captain’s armband but about setting standards every single day — something he believes Rice already does naturally.

Since arriving at the Emirates, Rice has quickly established himself as a commanding presence both on and off the pitch. His performances in midfield, marked by consistency, intensity, and tactical intelligence, have earned the respect of teammates, and Saka is among those who see his leadership qualities as vital to Arsenal’s long-term ambitions. The England winger is understood to appreciate Rice’s calm authority, especially during high-pressure moments when the team needs composure and direction.

Saka’s applause for Rice’s potential promotion reflects a wider sentiment within the squad. The midfielder’s communication on the pitch, his willingness to take responsibility, and his ability to rally teammates during difficult spells have stood out. From organizing the press to offering encouragement after setbacks, Rice embodies the kind of leadership that resonates strongly with a young and ambitious Arsenal side.

What particularly impresses Saka is Rice’s professionalism. Training standards at London Colney have reportedly risen with Rice’s presence, and younger players feel comfortable looking to him for guidance. For Saka, who has himself become a role model for emerging talents, having a captain who leads by example aligns perfectly with the culture Arteta has worked hard to build.

While Martin Ødegaard remains a respected figure in the dressing room, the idea of Rice as captain is gaining traction due to his vocal nature and commanding influence in central areas of the pitch. Saka’s support does not come across as divisive but rather as an endorsement of what Rice brings to the collective.

As Arsenal continue to challenge on multiple fronts, leadership will be crucial in turning near-misses into trophies. Saka’s backing of Rice as a potential captain highlights the trust and unity within the squad — a sign that Arsenal’s core players believe the club is moving in the right direction. Whether or not the armband officially changes hands, Saka’s applause underlines Rice’s growing importance at the heart of Arteta’s Arsenal project.
