Wayne Rooney has weighed in on Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League clash against Bournemouth, offering a bold tactical suggestion that has already sparked debate among fans and pundits alike.
The Manchester United legend believes the Gunners will significantly improve their chances of securing all three points if Mikel Arteta makes the brave decision to bench Viktor Gyökeres for the match.
Speaking during a football analysis segment, Rooney argued that Arsenal’s recent performances have shown a clear imbalance in their attacking structure, one he feels stems from trying to force the team to play through Gyökeres at the expense of fluidity and tempo. While acknowledging the striker’s quality and physical presence, Rooney insisted that Arteta’s system functions best when movement, pressing, and quick combinations take priority over a fixed focal point up front.
According to Rooney, Bournemouth are exactly the type of opponent that can punish Arsenal if they become predictable. “Arsenal are at their best when the front line is fluid,” Rooney explained. “When you have players rotating positions, dragging defenders out, and attacking space from deep, Bournemouth struggle to cope. If Arsenal go into that game trying to feed one striker all the time, it becomes easier to defend against.”
