Arsenal have made contact to sign Italian international midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in the summer, as per Tuttomercatoweb.
Since arriving from AC Milan in 2023, Tonali has developed into not only one of Newcastle United’s most influential players but also one of the Premier League’s best midfielders over the last two seasons.
Even in a disappointing campaign for the Magpies, who finished 12th, the 25-year-old stood out consistently. He made 53 appearances across all competitions, including 35 of the 38 Premier League matches this season, scoring three goals and registering seven assists.
His combative presence in midfield, especially when paired with club captain Bruno Guimarães, has earned widespread praise from both supporters and opposing teams, with several sides now expected to compete for his signature next summer.
Now, according to Tuttomercatoweb, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is looking to bolster his squad with more top-level players and has set his sights on Tonali as a viable option.
Having previously made an unsuccessful attempt to sign the 26-year-old in January, the Gunners have in recent days reignited their interest in signing the tenacious midfielder in the summer, according to the report.

Arsenal are now stepping up efforts to seal the deal with the Italian outlet, adding that the Premier League champions are in contact with Newcastle to discuss the fees involved in a potential deal for Tonali.
Even with a wide range of midfield options already available, there remains a clear requirement for a high-quality addition in the middle of the pitch, particularly with Christian Nørgaard expected to depart, making a move for Sandro Tonali appear increasingly straightforward.
The Italian has built a strong reputation on the back of his tireless output with and without the ball, and his numbers back that up across a range of key metrics.
On the ball, he has put together an 84.4% pass-completion rate and landed 71 long passes while also contributing to 32 chances created for Newcastle. His 2,030 total touches—25 of which came inside the opposition’s penalty area—highlight both his box-to-box attributes and his natural fit to Arteta’s dominant style of play.
Defensively, his contributions are just as striking: 107 duels won, 35 tackles, 31 interceptions, 147 recoveries, and a combined total of 257 defensive actions across the campaign, as per FOTMOB.
However, Newcastle have proved to be tough negotiators, so Arsenal will need to submit a concrete offer around his £68m Transfermarkt valuation to convince them to sell their key man in the summer.
