Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has admitted he would be disappointed if highly-rated Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola chooses Arsenal over Chelsea this summer, as speculation surrounding the French star’s future continues to intensify.
Barcola has emerged as one of the most sought-after attacking players in European football following a sensational campaign with PSG. His pace, creativity, and eye for goal have attracted interest from several top clubs, with both Arsenal and Chelsea reportedly monitoring his situation closely.
Speaking during a football discussion, Mikel expressed his concern over the possibility of the talented winger ending up at the Emirates Stadium instead of Stamford Bridge.
“As a Chelsea man, I would be disappointed if Barcola joined Arsenal,” Mikel reportedly said. “He’s exactly the type of player Chelsea need right now. He’s young, exciting, fearless on the ball, and he has already shown he can perform at the highest level. If Arsenal manage to get him, it would be a huge statement.”
The former Nigerian international believes Arsenal’s recent success under Mikel Arteta has made them an increasingly attractive destination for elite players. After winning the Premier League title and establishing themselves among Europe’s top clubs once again, the Gunners are now seen as a major force in the transfer market.
“Players want to join winning projects,” Mikel continued. “Arsenal have shown incredible progress over the last few years. They’ve built a strong squad, they play attractive football, and they’re competing for every major trophy. That’s why top players are looking at Arsenal seriously.”
According to reports, Arsenal have been exploring several attacking options as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of next season. Barcola is believed to be among the club’s priority targets, with Arteta keen to add more quality and depth to his forward line.
Mikel warned Chelsea that allowing Arsenal to win the race for Barcola could have significant consequences for the balance of power in English football.
“When you look at Arsenal’s attack already, adding someone like Barcola would make them even more dangerous. Defenders struggle against him because he’s unpredictable. He can score, create chances, and stretch teams with his pace. That’s the kind of signing that can help a team dominate for years.”
Chelsea have also been linked with a number of attacking players this summer, but Mikel insists the club must move quickly if they want to compete with Arsenal for elite talent.
“The recruitment team has to be aggressive,” he said. “You can’t sit back and watch your rivals sign players that improve them. Chelsea have always attracted the best talents, and they need to make sure that continues.”
While PSG are understood to be reluctant to part ways with one of their brightest young stars, reports suggest interest from Premier League clubs continues to grow. Arsenal’s strong recent performances and ambitious transfer plans have only fueled speculation that they could make a serious move should an opportunity arise.
For Arsenal supporters, the prospect of seeing Barcola line up alongside the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Declan Rice is an exciting one. For Chelsea fans, however, Mikel’s comments reflect a growing fear that another top talent could be heading to one of their biggest rivals.
Whether Barcola ultimately remains in Paris or makes a move elsewhere, one thing is certain: his future will be one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer. And if Arsenal manage to secure his signature, it would be viewed by many as another major victory for Arteta’s rapidly growing project.
