Manchester United are hoping to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.
Tottenham are keen on the 21-year-old Portuguese International as well. According to Ben Jacobs, Manchester United are ‘in active talks’ to sign the player and will have to pay a premium to get the deal done.
Can Man United sign Fernandes?
Jacobs wrote on X: “Manchester United and Spurs both in talks with Mateus Fernandes and West Ham. Suggestions the player has decided on a club are premature as of this morning. Spurs have held advanced talks with the player, while Manchester United discussions ongoing since May. Both clubs are in active talks with West Ham. A £90m cash injection, plus multiple suitors, mean West Ham have to date stuck to their asking price. Further clarity expected soon. Not a saga the clubs or player want to drag out beyond July.”
West Ham United will not want to lose the player easily. Fernandes will want to continue in the Premier League, and the opportunity to play for Manchester United will be exciting for him. However, the two clubs must agree on a fee first.
Mateus Fernandes would be ideal for Man United
The Red Devils also need more quality in the middle of the park. They need someone who can control the tempo of the game and help out defensively. The West Ham star fits the profile perfectly, and he could be a solid long-term acquisition for the club. He’s a young player with a lot of potential, and Manchester United could groom him into a future star. He has already been described as the “ultimate Premier League midfielder” for his style of play.
Manchester United have secured Champions League qualification for the upcoming campaign, and they need quality players at their disposal. Signing the 21-year-old will help them improve in the middle of the park.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are pushing to get the deal done, and Manchester United needs to act quickly to win the race for his signature. Both clubs have the finances to pay a premium for the young midfielder, and it remains to be seen in which of the two clubs can convince him.
