PRO REF ADMITS MANCHESTER CITY GOAL SHOULD HAVE BEEN DISALLOWED AFTER CONTROVERSIAL MANCHESTER DERBY DECISION

Manchester United have received a major boost in their complaint over Sunday’s controversial Manchester derby defeat after Pro Ref admitted that Manchester City’s decisive goal should not have been allowed to stand.

Manchester City secured a dramatic 1-0 victory at Old Trafford, with Erling Haaland scoring the only goal of the game in the second half. However, what appeared at first to be a straightforward offside decision quickly became one of the biggest talking points of the match after VAR intervened and overturned the assistant referee’s original decision.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but following an extensive VAR review, the decision was changed and Haaland’s strike was awarded. City celebrated wildly, while Manchester United players immediately surrounded the officials in disbelief.

However, the controversy did not end with the final whistle.

Pro Ref has now admitted that the officials made an error in their handling of the incident, effectively confirming Manchester United’s argument that there was sufficient reason for the goal to be disallowed.

The admission has caused fresh anger among United supporters, particularly because the goal ultimately decided a match in which Manchester City had spent a significant period playing with ten men.

The crucial issue was not simply Haaland’s position.

Although Haaland was eventually considered to be in an onside position when the ball was played, the bigger question concerned Enzo Fernández and his position during the attacking move.

Fernández was in an offside position and attempted to play the ball. Although he did not make contact with it, his proximity to the ball and his attempt to become involved in the play became central to the controversy.

United argued that Fernández’s actions had an impact on the defensive situation and that his position should therefore have been considered when determining whether the goal was legal.

Initially, VAR decided that Fernández had not interfered sufficiently with play to justify overturning the goal. That decision allowed Haaland’s strike to stand.

But Pro Ref has now acknowledged that VAR failed to properly consider Fernández’s influence on the play.

According to the refereeing body’s assessment, the incident involved a subjective interpretation of offside and should have resulted in the referee being recommended to conduct an on-field review.

That is the part of the decision that will frustrate Manchester United the most.

The purpose of VAR is not simply to confirm whether a player’s foot, shoulder or head is beyond the defensive line. Offside decisions can also involve a player’s attempt to play the ball or interfere with an opponent.

In this case, Fernández’s involvement became the central question.

United defender Lisandro Martínez appeared to react to Fernández’s movement, while United players believed the City midfielder’s position affected the defensive situation.

For Michael Carrick, the Manchester United manager, the decision was difficult to understand.

Carrick had already expressed his frustration immediately after the match, questioning how the officials could reach the conclusion that Fernández’s involvement did not constitute interference.

The admission from Pro Ref will now make those complaints even more significant.

Manchester United lost the match 1-0, meaning the controversial decision was not merely a minor incident in a game that ended comfortably in City’s favour. It directly determined the result.

Haaland’s goal came around the hour mark and gave City the lead despite the visitors having been reduced to ten men earlier in the game following Phil Foden’s dismissal.

That made the goal even more significant.

City had been forced to defend for long periods after going down to ten men, while United had the numerical advantage and opportunities to punish their neighbours.

Yet after Haaland’s goal was awarded, United were unable to find an equaliser.

The home side came close on several occasions, with the woodwork denying United and Gianluigi Donnarumma producing important saves. Ultimately, City’s defensive resilience allowed them to leave Old Trafford with all three points.

From City’s perspective, the controversy does not erase the enormous effort required to win the derby with ten men.

The visitors defended extremely well after Foden’s red card, and Haaland produced the decisive moment when it mattered most.

But the Pro Ref admission means the result will inevitably be remembered alongside the officiating controversy.

For Manchester United supporters, the frustration is understandable.

There is a huge difference between losing a football match because the opposition scored a legitimate winning goal and losing because the refereeing body later acknowledges that the decisive goal should have been subjected to further review.

United cannot change the result.

The points remain with Manchester City.

But the admission provides some confirmation that their concerns were not simply emotional reactions to a painful derby defeat.

The situation also raises wider questions about the effectiveness of VAR.

VAR was introduced to reduce major refereeing mistakes and give officials an opportunity to correct important decisions. Yet Sunday’s incident demonstrates that even when multiple officials and technological assistance are available, the interpretation of the rules can still produce controversy.

The technology can determine where players are positioned.

What it cannot automatically decide is whether an offside player has interfered with an opponent or attempted to play the ball in a way that affects the outcome.

That requires human judgment.

And according to Pro Ref, the judgment made in this particular situation was wrong.

The fact that Pro Ref reportedly contacted Manchester United to acknowledge the mistake makes the situation even more extraordinary.

It means United’s complaint has effectively been validated after the match.

However, an apology or admission cannot give United the points back.

The 1-0 scoreline remains in the record books, while Manchester City continue to enjoy the momentum of an unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign.

For City, the controversy will probably be viewed as an unfortunate distraction from an impressive defensive performance.

For United, however, it represents another painful chapter in what has been a difficult start.

The Red Devils had the numerical advantage for a large portion of the match but failed to take advantage of it. Even with City down to ten men, United struggled to turn their possession and pressure into clear-cut opportunities.

That is why Carrick will likely have mixed feelings about the situation.

On one hand, the referee’s decision was clearly significant.

On the other, United had enough opportunities to avoid allowing one controversial decision to determine the entire match.

Nevertheless, the Pro Ref admission changes the narrative.

Before the statement, Manchester United could be accused of simply looking for an excuse after losing a derby.

Now there is an official acknowledgement that the crucial VAR decision contained an error.

The incident will also increase pressure on the Premier League’s refereeing authorities to explain exactly how such decisions are reached.

Supporters want consistency.

If an offside player attempts to play the ball and potentially affects an opponent, they want to know why that player is considered not to have interfered in one situation but might be judged differently in another.

Consistency is arguably the biggest challenge facing VAR.

Football fans can accept controversial decisions when the laws genuinely leave room for interpretation. What becomes difficult to accept is inconsistency in how similar incidents are judged.

That is why the Haaland goal has generated so much discussion.

The initial assistant referee decision was straightforward: offside.

VAR then spent almost three minutes reviewing the incident before overturning the call and awarding the goal. Manchester City celebrated, United protested, and the match continued.

Only after the final whistle did the controversy grow further.

Now, with Pro Ref acknowledging an error of judgment, the debate is likely to continue for days.

Manchester United will still have to move forward.

There is no replay of the Manchester derby and no opportunity to change the scoreline.

Carrick and his players must therefore focus on their next matches and, more importantly, learn from the areas where they failed.

United cannot rely on refereeing decisions going their way.

They must become good enough to overcome controversial moments.

At the same time, Premier League officials must understand why supporters are demanding greater accountability.

If VAR is going to intervene in major decisions, the process must be as transparent and consistent as possible.

Sunday’s Manchester derby demonstrated exactly why.

Manchester City left Old Trafford with the three points, Haaland left with another memorable derby goal, and United were left wondering what might have happened if the original offside decision had been allowed to stand.

Now Pro Ref has effectively answered that question from the perspective of officiating: the decision to award the goal was an error of judgment.

For Manchester United, that admission will offer little comfort.

The derby has already been lost.

The points have already gone to Manchester City.

But the official acknowledgement gives United supporters something they were demanding after the final whistle — confirmation that their concerns about the decisive goal were justified.

And that could make Haaland’s controversial strike one of the most debated goals of the Premier League season.
