Mikel Arteta has reportedly made a surprising assessment of Arsenal’s midfield options, suggesting that Myles Lewis-Skelly currently understands the club’s pattern of play better than new signing Bruno Guimarães.
The comparison has immediately attracted attention among Arsenal supporters because Guimarães arrived at the Emirates with a huge reputation and considerable Premier League experience, while Lewis-Skelly is still one of the youngest players in Arteta’s squad.
Arsenal completed the signing of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United for a reported £75 million, adding another powerful and technically gifted midfielder to an already competitive midfield group. The Brazilian international was brought in to provide additional quality, physicality, defensive strength and tactical flexibility.
However, Lewis-Skelly’s understanding of Arteta’s positional structure has become increasingly important. The teenager began his Arsenal career primarily as a left-back but has increasingly demonstrated his ability to operate in midfield. He started in midfield during Arsenal’s Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain and also impressed in the position during the club’s title run-in.
That development is reportedly one of the reasons Arteta has such strong confidence in him.
The key distinction is not necessarily about which player possesses greater individual ability. Instead, it is about familiarity with Arsenal’s system. Lewis-Skelly has spent years inside the club’s academy and has developed under the same footballing principles that Arteta demands from his senior players.

Premier League analysis of his 2025/26 numbers showed him outperforming Arsenal’s existing central midfielders in several defensive categories, including ground duels won and tackles won per 90 minutes.
That makes him a significant addition to Arteta’s squad.
Yet Lewis-Skelly offers something that statistics cannot completely measure: familiarity.
The young midfielder already knows the movements expected of Arsenal’s players. He understands the triggers for pressing, the importance of maintaining passing angles and the positional rotations that allow Arsenal to control games.
Arteta’s decision to use him in midfield during important matches has demonstrated the trust the manager has developed in his tactical understanding.
Lewis-Skelly’s performance in the Champions League final was particularly significant. Having started the campaign primarily as a left-back, he had developed sufficiently in midfield to be trusted in one of the biggest matches in Arsenal’s recent history.
That progression has changed the conversation surrounding his future.
Earlier in the summer, there was speculation about Lewis-Skelly’s position in Arsenal’s squad following the arrival of Guimarães. Rather than viewing the two players simply as competitors, Arteta could potentially use their different strengths depending on the opponent.

Against opponents who press aggressively, Lewis-Skelly’s composure and familiarity with Arsenal’s positional structure could become particularly useful.
That tactical flexibility could ultimately be one of Arsenal’s biggest strengths.
The most interesting part of the reported comments is the suggestion that understanding Arsenal’s football is currently more important than reputation or transfer fee.
Guimarães may have arrived as one of the most expensive midfield additions in Arsenal’s history, but a big transfer fee does not automatically mean a player immediately understands every movement required by Arteta.
Lewis-Skelly has the advantage of having grown within the system.

The comparison should therefore not be interpreted as a declaration that Lewis-Skelly is a superior player to Guimarães.
