Ødegaard Under Scrutiny After Arsenal’s 3–0 Defeat
Martin Ødegaard has come under scrutiny following Arsenal’s disappointing 3–0 defeat to Brighton, with the captain among several midfielders questioned after the team struggled to cope with Brighton’s intense pressing. Arsenal were unable to establish control in midfield, while Brighton repeatedly disrupted their build-up and forced mistakes.
Ødegaard started the match in his usual attacking midfield role and had one of Arsenal’s better opportunities before halftime, but his overall influence was limited as Brighton’s midfield pressed aggressively. Tactical analysis of the match highlighted how Brighton’s midfielders pushed onto Arsenal’s central players, making it difficult for Ødegaard and his teammates to find space and dictate the game.
The criticism should not be placed entirely on the Arsenal captain, however. Mikel Arteta himself said after the match that Arsenal failed to compete at the required level, lost too many duels and made technical errors in dangerous areas. Reuters reported that Arteta acknowledged Brighton were the better team on the day.
The defeat ended Arsenal’s winning start and exposed weaknesses across the team rather than from one individual player. Nevertheless, Ødegaard’s role as captain means supporters will expect him to help Arsenal respond when the Premier League returns.
The international break now gives Arteta and his players time to analyse what went wrong and prepare for their next league fixture.
