BREAKING: Casemiro admits only Carlos Baleba can…see more

Casemiro Confirms Carlos Baleba Can Perfectly Replace Him at Manchester United.

The transition from one generation of Manchester United midfielders to another is already underway, and Carlos Baleba has emerged as one of the most important pieces of the club’s new midfield project. With Casemiro’s Manchester United chapter coming to an end, attention has naturally turned toward the question of who can provide the defensive strength, physicality and midfield discipline that the Brazilian brought to Old Trafford.

Recent discussion surrounding Baleba has increasingly presented the Cameroon international as a natural successor to Casemiro. Reports have even suggested that Casemiro has identified Baleba as a player capable of taking over the responsibilities associated with the position. However, while that specific endorsement should be treated as a reported claim rather than a confirmed direct quotation from Casemiro, the footballing logic behind the comparison is clear. Manchester United themselves completed Baleba’s signing in August 2026, handing the 22-year-old a contract through June 2031 with an option for another year.

Baleba’s arrival represents a major change in the way Manchester United are building their midfield. Casemiro brought years of experience from Real Madrid and Brazil, including an extraordinary collection of major trophies, while Baleba arrives as a younger, more dynamic midfielder with considerable room to develop.

That difference is important.

Casemiro’s greatest strength during his best years was his ability to protect the defence, win possession, dominate physical battles and provide security to the players around him. Baleba, meanwhile, offers a similar defensive presence but combines it with the athleticism and ball-carrying ability that modern midfield football increasingly demands.

Manchester United’s own assessment of Baleba provides some evidence for why the club considers him such an important addition. The club stated that during the 2024/25 Premier League season, Baleba ranked sixth among midfielders for combined tackles and interceptions and fourth for progressive ball carries per 90 minutes. Last season, he also ranked in the top eight per cent of Premier League players for combined tackles and interceptions and the top one per cent for second balls won.

Those numbers help explain why his name became closely associated with the search for Casemiro’s successor.

For years, Manchester United have needed a midfielder capable of operating as the defensive foundation of the team. When Casemiro was performing at his highest level, he gave the midfield a physical presence that allowed more attacking players to move forward. His positioning, tackling, anticipation and experience frequently helped United recover possession and protect the back four.

Baleba has the potential to provide a different version of that role.

He is younger, quicker across the ground and particularly comfortable carrying the ball through midfield. Rather than simply winning possession and immediately releasing it, Baleba can use his physical strength and acceleration to drive Manchester United forward.

That could become one of the most significant differences between the two players.

Casemiro often operated as the traditional holding midfielder, while Baleba has shown that he can combine defensive work with progressive movement. His ability to carry the ball could allow Manchester United to escape pressure more effectively and transition from defence into attack at greater speed.

This is particularly important for Michael Carrick’s Manchester United.

Carrick has repeatedly emphasized the importance of having a strong midfield foundation. Before Baleba’s arrival was completed, Carrick explained that the midfield provides the foundation of a team and stressed the importance of having balance and a strong spine.

Baleba therefore arrives at Old Trafford with an enormous responsibility.

He is not simply another midfielder added to the squad. He has been brought into a team that has just lost one of its most experienced midfielders, and expectations will naturally follow.

The comparisons with Casemiro are inevitable.

Casemiro’s departure left a major gap in Manchester United’s midfield. Reports earlier in 2026 identified Baleba, Elliott Anderson, Adam Wharton and Sandro Tonali among the midfielders United considered as potential replacements.

United eventually decided to pursue Baleba, agreeing a deal with Brighton worth an initial £65 million plus potential add-ons.

The decision showed how highly United’s recruitment team valued the midfielder.

At just 22, Baleba also represents a very different recruitment philosophy from the signing of Casemiro. When Casemiro arrived at Manchester United, he was already an established world-class midfielder with years of elite-level experience. Baleba arrives at an earlier stage of his career, meaning United are betting on both his current ability and his future development.

That distinction could prove important over the coming seasons.

Baleba does not have to become Casemiro overnight.

In fact, trying to replicate everything Casemiro did would probably be unnecessary. Manchester United can instead build a midfield around Baleba’s own strengths.

His defensive aggression, ability to win second balls, physical presence and progressive carries can become defining characteristics of the new midfield.

And there is another factor that makes Baleba particularly interesting: Premier League experience.

Before joining United, he had already established himself in English football with Brighton. That means he understands the speed, physicality and tactical demands of the Premier League.

United are therefore not introducing him to English football at the same time as introducing him to elite football.

He already knows the league.

Now he has to prove that he can perform at the level expected of a Manchester United player.

That is a completely different challenge.

Playing for Brighton and playing for Manchester United come with different expectations. At Brighton, Baleba could develop without carrying the same pressure that accompanies every Manchester United performance. At Old Trafford, every misplaced pass, missed tackle and poor performance will receive much greater attention.

That is where Casemiro’s experience becomes impossible to replace immediately.

Casemiro knew how to handle pressure.

He had already played in Champions League finals, World Cup matches and title races before arriving in Manchester. Baleba has not accumulated that same experience.

But what he lacks in experience, he can potentially compensate for with youth, energy and development.

The fact that United have committed to him until 2031 demonstrates that the club is thinking beyond the immediate season.

The long-term plan appears to be building a midfield around younger players capable of growing together.

Baleba’s arrival alongside Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos further strengthens that transformation. The club has effectively moved from an experienced Casemiro-led midfield toward a younger and more varied midfield structure.

That could change the way United play.

With Baleba protecting the defence and covering ground, other midfielders can potentially be given greater freedom to influence attacking phases. His ability to win the ball and immediately carry it forward can also shorten the distance between Manchester United’s defensive and attacking units.

That is one reason why his signing has generated so much attention.

He does not necessarily have to be the next Casemiro.

He can become the first Carlos Baleba.

And if the reported Casemiro endorsement is accurate, it would add another interesting dimension to the story. A departing veteran effectively identifying a younger midfielder as capable of taking over his responsibilities would represent a symbolic passing of the torch.

Casemiro’s Manchester United career has already demonstrated how valuable a dominant defensive midfielder can be.

Now Baleba has the opportunity to establish his own legacy.

There will inevitably be difficult moments. At 22, Baleba is still developing his decision-making, consistency and tactical understanding. Manchester United supporters should not expect him to reproduce Casemiro’s entire career immediately.

Instead, his progress will likely be measured over time.

The physical tools are already obvious.

His ability to cover ground, challenge opponents, win possession and carry the ball gives him a profile that fits the demands of modern Premier League football. Manchester United’s official announcement also highlighted his defensive numbers and progressive carrying ability, reinforcing why the club believes he can contribute immediately while continuing to develop.

The biggest question is whether he can translate those qualities consistently onto the biggest stage.

Old Trafford will provide the answer.

Every week, Baleba will face opponents looking to attack the space around Manchester United’s midfield. He will be expected to protect the defence, win duels, support his teammates and maintain possession under pressure.

If he succeeds, Manchester United could have the foundation of a midfield capable of serving the club for many years.

And that is ultimately what makes the Casemiro-Baleba comparison so fascinating.

Casemiro represented experience.

Baleba represents the future.

Casemiro relied heavily on positioning, anticipation and years of elite-level experience.

Baleba brings athleticism, energy, defensive aggression and progressive carrying.

They are not identical players, but there are enough similarities in their defensive responsibilities for Baleba to be considered a logical successor.

The real test now begins.

Manchester United have invested heavily in Carlos Baleba, and the midfielder has already made clear how significant the move is to him. Upon joining, Baleba described Manchester United as the club of his dreams and said he was determined to contribute to the team’s ambitions.

Those words will now be followed by performances.

Casemiro’s era is over.

Baleba’s has begun.

And if the young Cameroonian can combine the defensive discipline associated with Casemiro’s role with his own outstanding physical and progressive qualities, Manchester United may eventually discover that replacing Casemiro does not require finding another Casemiro.
