“It’s going to be a no contest for them, they will win easily”: Wayne Rooney predicts who’s going to win between Arsenal and Chelsea in their upcoming London derby clash

Posted on February 26, 2026 by admin

Wayne Rooney has tipped Arsenal F.C. to come out on top when they face Chelsea F.C. in their next Premier League encounter, backing Mikel Arteta’s side to edge what he expects to be a fiercely contested London derby.

Speaking during a recent punditry appearance, Rooney made it clear that while Chelsea have shown flashes of improvement, Arsenal’s consistency, tactical maturity, and midfield dominance give them the upper hand. The former Manchester United captain pointed to Arsenal’s control in big matches this season, arguing that they now play with the confidence of genuine title contenders.

Rooney highlighted the influence of Declan Rice in the heart of midfield, describing him as the kind of player who “sets the tone in games of this magnitude.” According to Rooney, Arsenal’s ability to dictate tempo through Rice, combined with the creativity of Martin Ødegaard and the direct threat posed by Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, gives them multiple routes to hurt Chelsea.

He also praised Arsenal’s defensive stability, noting that William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães have formed one of the most reliable centre-back partnerships in the league. Rooney suggested that against a Chelsea side that can be dangerous in transition, defensive organisation will be key — and Arsenal, in his view, are currently better equipped in that department.

While acknowledging Chelsea’s attacking talents and their unpredictability under pressure, Rooney questioned whether they have the consistency required to overcome a side as structured as Arsenal. “In big derby matches, structure and belief matter,” he reportedly said. “Arsenal have both right now.”

This fixture has often delivered drama in recent seasons, with momentum swinging between the two London rivals. However, Rooney believes Arsenal’s evolution under Arteta has changed the dynamic. He pointed to the Gunners’ improved mentality in high-stakes matches, especially away from home, as a decisive factor.

For Arsenal supporters, Rooney’s prediction will add to the growing sense of expectation surrounding the team. With the title race tightening and every point crucial, a victory over Chelsea would not only strengthen their position in the table but also send a strong statement to their rivals.

Chelsea, of course, will see the game as an opportunity to disrupt Arsenal’s ambitions and reassert themselves in one of English football’s fiercest rivalries. But if Rooney’s assessment proves accurate, Arsenal’s cohesion, midfield control, and defensive resilience could be the difference on the day.

As anticipation builds for another chapter in this historic London derby, all eyes will be on whether Rooney’s prediction holds true — and whether Arsenal can once again rise to the occasion when it matters most.
