“I’m having a sleepless nights because of him, I don’t know how we can stop him”: Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe says he’s having a sleepless nights thinking on how to stop ONE particular Manchester United player who has been Michael Carrick’s secret weapon this season

Newcastle United will welcome Manchester United to St James’ Park on Wednesday night in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the week in the Premier League.

Ahead of the clash, Magpies manager Eddie Howe has singled out one name as a major concern for his side — striker Benjamin Sesko.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Howe admitted that Sesko’s physical presence and sharp movement in the final third could pose serious problems for his defenders.

“He’s a big threat,” Howe said. “He’s got pace, power, and he’s very intelligent with his runs. When he gets service, he’s clinical. We have to be extremely focused for 90 minutes.”

Sesko has steadily grown into a key figure for United, combining his towering frame with surprising agility. His ability to stretch defensive lines and attack crosses makes him dangerous in open play, while his composure in one-on-one situations has added another dimension to United’s attack. Howe acknowledged that stopping Sesko will require collective discipline rather than relying on one defender.

“It’s not just about one centre-back marking him,” Howe explained. “It’s about the whole team structure — cutting off supply lines, being compact between the lines, and winning second balls. If you allow quality players time and space, they punish you.”

Newcastle have been strong at home this season, with their high-intensity pressing and quick transitions often overwhelming opponents at St James’ Park. Howe is expected to demand aggression from the first whistle, knowing that giving Manchester United early confidence could tilt the balance of the match.

At the same time, Howe emphasized that his team must not become overly fixated on Sesko alone. “Manchester United have quality across the pitch,” he noted. “But Sesko is someone we’ve specifically prepared for because of the way he impacts games. He can change the momentum with a single action.”

The tactical battle could revolve around how Newcastle handle crosses into the box and through balls behind the defensive line. Sesko thrives on quick service from wide areas and through midfield channels, and United are likely to test Newcastle’s defensive coordination repeatedly.

For the home supporters, Wednesday night offers another opportunity to make St James’ Park a fortress. Howe believes the atmosphere can play a crucial role in unsettling United’s rhythm and limiting Sesko’s influence.

“We need our crowd,” Howe added. “They’ve been incredible for us. In games like this, the energy from the stands can lift the players and make it difficult for the opposition.”

With both teams aiming for crucial points in the league table, the stakes are high. Newcastle will look to assert their physicality and tempo, while Manchester United will hope their attacking firepower — spearheaded by Sesko — can silence the home crowd.

If Howe’s warnings are anything to go by, Newcastle are under no illusions about the challenge ahead. Containing Benjamin Sesko may well determine whether Wednesday night ends in celebration or frustration for the Magpies.
