Breaking-News: “Underrated Giants Cornerback Dominated in Silence And He Is Set for Explosive Breakout

Posted on May 20, 2025 by admin

The New York Giants’ 2024 NFL Draft class may have just secured Joe Schoen’s job as general manager. While they didn’t land a franchise quarterback — despite the fact that three were drafted after their sixth-overall pick — wide receiver Malik Nabers has emerged as a star, and several key starters were found in the later rounds.

On Day 2, safety Tyler Nubin and cornerback Dru Phillips were brought in as new starters, while on Day 3, tight end Theo Johnson quickly overtook Daniel Bellinger for the starting job, and running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. became a key piece in the Giants’ long-term plans.

Despite entering the draft with modest expectations, the Giants far exceeded them, largely due to the opportunities created by a weaker roster. Among the rookies who made the most of these chances was Phillips, who was immediately inserted as the starting slot corner in Week 1 and held onto that role throughout the season.

Pro Football Focus recently named Phillips the Giants’ most underrated player, citing his strong performance as a rookie despite some injury setbacks. Phillips played over 600 defensive snaps in a critical role and finished the season with a solid 77.5 overall PFF grade, ranking in the top 10 for cornerbacks.

He was also one of only eight cornerbacks to rank in the top 25 for both PFF coverage (75.8) and run-defense (78.1) grades. Notably, he was one of just three cornerbacks to achieve this while primarily playing in the slot, where his run-defense abilities were more frequently tested.

While Phillips wasn’t overly flashy as a rookie — forcing two fumbles and recording an interception — he demonstrated a willingness to battle against the run and hold his own in coverage, a feat made even more impressive given the instability around him. With a stronger supporting cast and another offseason to study defensive coordinator Shane Bowen’s scheme, Phillips could be primed for a breakout season.

As one of Schoen’s most promising third-round picks, Phillips’ future looks bright, and with continued development, he could quickly become one of the cornerstones of the Giants’ defense.
