Legendary Real Madrid player Luka Modric seems to be on the verge of leaving the club in the summer. This comes after a season in which he has been demoted to the bench for the majority of the games played. At the conclusion of the current season, the 38-year-old player will no longer be bound by his contract.
Although his departure seems to be a foregone conclusion for all parties concerned, Carlo Ancelotti did make one more effort to retain him at the club by giving him a position on the coaching staff in the event that he were to decide to retire.The offer has been graciously rebuffed by Modric up to this point, with the exception of a sudden change of heart, since he does not want to stop playing.
Despite the fact that his future beyond Los Blancos is uncertain – Saudi Arabia made inquiries about him over the summer of 2017 – Cadena SER reports that Modric plans to continue playing for at least another two years, which would bring him to the age of 40 for the first time. In addition to this, he has expressed his desire to continue playing for Croatia at the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Mexico, Canada, and the United States of America. Even at this moment, he has the impression that he still has football left in his legs.
In that sense, it is possible that this season did help him achieve that objective. If Modric does aim to continue playing on a regular basis until then, he will have had a season that is far less taxing on his legs this year, which might possibly prolong what he is capable of doing in the course of his career. Even so, he is going to be Croatia’s captain for the Euros, which will be held in Germany this summer.
