QB Reunites with Ohio State Stars, Chooses New York Over Pittsburgh Loyalty
After a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, quarterback Justin Fields has opted for a fresh start, signing a two-year, $40 million deal with the New York Jets — a decision that closes the door on a potential return to Pittsburgh in 2025.
Fields, who started six games for the Steelers in 2024 and posted a solid 4-2 record, was benched in Week 7 in favor of veteran Russell Wilson. Despite that setback, Fields insists the benching didn’t influence his decision to leave. “You can’t take things personal,” Fields told ESPN. “That’s one thing I’ve learned over the years.” He credited Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin for making what he believed was the best choice for the team, saying, “I’m not a selfish guy whatsoever, so I just tried to change my perspective and get better each and every day in practice.”
Although loyalty and professionalism shaped Fields’ exit from Pittsburgh, his move to New York appears to be motivated by a combination of opportunity, leadership, financial security, and familiarity. A key factor was the presence of new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, whose vision for the team excited Fields. “At the end of the day, I was just excited about what the Jets had going on here with AG [Glenn] and the coaching staff,” he said.
Financial terms also played a role. Fields’ contract with the Jets includes $30 million guaranteed, with $10 million of that earmarked for the 2026 season — a level of commitment the Steelers reportedly weren’t willing to match, offering no guaranteed money beyond 2025.
Another draw for Fields was the chance to reunite with several of his former Ohio State teammates, including star receiver Garrett Wilson, tight end Jeremy Ruckert, and offensive lineman Josh Myers. The reunion has added a layer of comfort and chemistry for the quarterback, who said it felt “just like the old days.”
With a 9-10 record as a starter over the past two seasons — including 8-4 over his last 12 games — Fields believes he has shown he can win. “I think I did what I was asked to do,” he said. “I’ve always been a team player.” Now, with the Jets, he’ll have a chance to prove he can lead.
