“If Mikel Arteta is not sacked tomorrow, I’ll denounce this club…We lost because he benched our best player”: Ian Wright says Arsenal lost today because Mikel Arteta bench their best player and urged the club to sack him

Ian Wright has pointed to a major selection decision as the turning point in Arsenal FC’s recent defeat, insisting that leaving Viktor Gyökeres on the bench ultimately cost the team the match.

Speaking in his post-match analysis, Wright did not hold back. The former Arsenal striker questioned why a forward of Gyökeres’ form and physical presence was left out of the starting lineup, especially in a game where Arsenal struggled to convert chances and lacked a focal point in attack. According to Wright, the decision disrupted the team’s balance and removed a key threat that could have changed the outcome.

He argued that Gyökeres offers something different compared to Arsenal’s usual attacking options—strength, direct running, and the ability to occupy defenders—which would have been crucial against a compact opposition. Wright suggested that without him leading the line, Arsenal became too predictable, relying heavily on wide play and intricate passing without a decisive end product.

Wright also highlighted moments in the match where crosses were delivered into the box with no dominant presence to attack them, something he believes Gyökeres would have thrived on. He stressed that in tight games, having a striker who can create something out of nothing is often the difference between winning and losing.

While acknowledging that football decisions are never simple, Wright maintained that this particular call backfired. He added that introducing Gyökeres later in the game was not enough to make the desired impact, as the tempo and structure of the match had already been set.

The criticism adds further pressure on Mikel Arteta, whose tactical choices are now under increased scrutiny following the defeat. For Arsenal, the debate over team selection could become a key talking point as they look to respond and keep their season on track.
