“He must start for us against PSG before we can win the Champions League.”: Patrick Vieira names ONE injured Arsenal star who must be start against PSG for the Gunners to win

Posted on May 27, 2026 by admin

Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira has urged Mikel Arteta to make a huge decision ahead of the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain by starting Jurrien Timber even if the defender is not fully fit.

Arsenal are preparing for one of the biggest matches in the club’s history as they get ready to face PSG in the Champions League final in Budapest. However, injury concerns continue to dominate discussions around Arteta’s squad, with Timber still battling to recover from a groin problem that has troubled him in recent weeks.

Despite those concerns, Vieira believes the Dutch defender is simply too important to leave out of the starting lineup. The former Arsenal captain reportedly insisted that Timber “has to play” and suggested he would still trust the defender even if he was not 100 percent fit for the final.

Vieira’s comments underline just how influential Timber has become for Arsenal this season. The Dutch international has established himself as one of the club’s most dependable defenders thanks to his versatility, composure, defensive awareness and ability to play under pressure. After recovering from the serious ACL injury that disrupted the beginning of his Arsenal career, Timber has returned stronger and quickly became a vital figure in Arteta’s side.

His absence in recent weeks has certainly raised concerns among Arsenal supporters. Although the Gunners have continued to perform strongly domestically, Timber’s injury has created uncertainty in the defensive setup heading into the most important game of the season. With Ben White also struggling with fitness issues, Arteta could be left short of experience at right back if Timber fails to recover in time.

Vieira clearly feels Arsenal cannot afford to leave out a player of Timber’s quality against a PSG side filled with attacking talent. The French champions possess one of the most dangerous forward lines in Europe, with pace, creativity and technical brilliance capable of hurting any defence. Arsenal’s organisation at the back will therefore be absolutely crucial if they are to stand a chance of lifting the Champions League trophy.

According to Vieira, Timber’s ability to defend aggressively in one-on-one situations and remain calm under pressure could be decisive against PSG’s quick attackers. The Arsenal legend believes the defender’s intelligence and composure on the ball would also help the Gunners deal with PSG’s pressing and transitions during the final.

Vieira also reportedly pointed to Arsenal’s strength from set pieces as another major advantage heading into the showdown. He believes Arsenal can seriously trouble PSG from corners and free-kicks because of the physical presence and aerial power Arteta’s side possesses. Arsenal have consistently scored from dead-ball situations this season, and Vieira feels that could become one of the key factors in the final.

The tactical battle between both teams is already generating huge excitement across Europe. PSG’s explosive attack against Arsenal’s disciplined defensive structure promises to be one of the defining contests of the game. While some pundits believe PSG’s attacking quality could overwhelm Arsenal, others feel the Gunners’ organisation, physicality and mentality could give them the edge.

For Arteta, the biggest dilemma may ultimately revolve around Timber’s fitness. Starting a player who is not fully recovered in a Champions League final carries obvious risks, especially against a side as intense as PSG. However, leaving out one of Arsenal’s most important defenders could also weaken the team considerably.

Arsenal fans will now continue monitoring Timber’s recovery closely as the final approaches. There remains hope that the defender could recover in time and return to the starting lineup for the biggest match of the season.

If Timber is ultimately declared fit enough to play, his inclusion could provide a massive psychological boost for Arsenal. The Dutch defender has already shown throughout the campaign that he thrives in high-pressure situations, and many supporters will likely agree with Vieira that even a slightly injured Timber could still offer more stability than any alternative option available to Arteta.

As excitement continues building ahead of the Champions League final, all attention will remain on Arsenal’s team news and Arteta’s final decision. Whether the manager follows Vieira’s advice could ultimately have a huge impact on Arsenal’s hopes of finally conquering Europe and bringing the Champions League trophy back to North London.
