CONFIRMED: Micheal Carrick confirmed Man Utd has agreed…see more

Posted on August 19, 2026 by admin

Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba in what would represent one of the biggest midfield moves of the summer transfer window.

The Cameroon international has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford for more than a year, and his potential arrival would give Michael Carrick another powerful and athletic option in the heart of the Manchester United midfield.

Baleba has long been regarded as one of the most exciting young midfielders in the Premier League, and Manchester United’s interest in him is nothing new. The club have monitored his development closely and previously explored the possibility of bringing him to Old Trafford. Recent reports, however, suggest that United’s interest had cooled as the club considered alternative midfield targets and completed other additions. Sky Sports reported that Baleba and Roma midfielder Manu Koné were among the players strongly considered as United searched for another central midfielder.

The latest reports will therefore come as major news to Manchester United supporters, particularly those who have spent months calling for the club to strengthen its defensive midfield options. Baleba’s physical presence, ability to win possession and willingness to carry the ball forward make him a particularly attractive profile for a team attempting to become more competitive in the Premier League.

Manchester United have already made changes to their midfield this summer, with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos among the additions reported in recent weeks. Yet the club’s recruitment team have continued to examine further options, with Carrick reportedly keen to add another midfielder before the transfer window closes.

If United were genuinely able to complete a deal for Baleba, it would be a significant statement of intent. The 22-year-old has developed into an important player for Brighton and possesses many of the characteristics required to succeed at the highest level. His strength in challenges, acceleration over short distances, ability to cover ground and confidence in possession could potentially transform the balance of Manchester United’s midfield.

Baleba’s history with Manchester United makes the story even more interesting. The club were heavily linked with the midfielder previously, but Brighton’s valuation proved to be a major obstacle. Reports from last summer indicated that United and Baleba had broadly agreed personal terms, while Brighton placed a valuation close to £115 million on the midfielder. The two clubs were therefore far apart in their assessments of the player’s value.

That situation appears to have changed. Baleba’s form during the 2025/26 campaign was less impressive than during his previous breakthrough period, and reports indicate that Brighton are now more open to listening to offers. Some recent reports have suggested that a deal could potentially be negotiated in the region of £60 million to £65 million, although other reports have placed Brighton’s expectations closer to £70 million.

For Manchester United, the possibility of obtaining Baleba for substantially less than Brighton’s previous valuation would make the transfer considerably more attractive. The club have to be careful with their spending, particularly after investing heavily in several positions, and securing a young midfielder with Premier League experience could be viewed as a long-term investment rather than simply another expensive signing.

Baleba would also bring something different to the midfield. Manchester United have technically gifted players who can dictate possession and create opportunities, but the team have often needed greater physicality and defensive protection in central areas. Baleba’s ability to cover large spaces could allow more attacking players to operate with greater freedom.

One of the most attractive aspects of his game is his ability to combine defensive work with progressive movement. He is not simply a midfielder who sits in front of the defence and waits for opponents to attack. He is capable of winning the ball and immediately turning defence into attack, carrying possession through midfield and helping his team escape pressure.

That characteristic could be particularly useful for Manchester United. When opponents press aggressively, United need midfielders capable of receiving the ball under pressure and progressing play. Baleba’s physical strength and composure could give the team another route through the press.

His arrival could also have tactical consequences for the rest of the squad. A stronger defensive midfielder would provide additional protection for the back four and allow United’s more creative players to concentrate on attacking responsibilities. It could also make the midfield more difficult for opponents to dominate.

The potential transfer has attracted considerable attention because Baleba has been one of the Premier League’s most discussed young midfielders. Manchester United are not the only club to have shown interest. Newcastle United have emerged as serious admirers of the Brighton star, particularly after major changes to their own midfield. Recent reports indicate that Newcastle have been considering Baleba as a possible replacement for Bruno Guimarães, with Brighton potentially demanding around £65 million.

That competition could make the situation complicated for United. If Brighton are genuinely willing to negotiate, there could be several clubs prepared to make an offer. Manchester United would therefore need to move quickly if they wanted to prevent Baleba from becoming the subject of a bidding war.

However, reports have also suggested that Baleba himself has been particularly interested in Manchester United. Earlier reports claimed that he was keen on a move to Old Trafford, while further reports indicated that he had discussed the possibility of joining United with members of the club’s squad.

That alleged desire could become important if multiple clubs enter the race. A player’s preference does not guarantee a transfer, but it can influence negotiations, particularly when clubs are competing for the same footballer.

For Manchester United supporters, the prospect of Baleba arriving at Old Trafford would represent the continuation of a midfield rebuild. The club have been attempting to create a squad capable of competing at the top end of English football, and adding a young, powerful Premier League midfielder would fit that strategy.

There is also an argument that Baleba could become one of the foundations of United’s midfield for years to come. At just 22, he still has significant room for improvement. His physical qualities are already obvious, while his technical and tactical development could continue under a manager who gives him a clearly defined role.

Carrick could potentially use him as the deeper midfielder in a three-man midfield or alongside another central midfielder in a system that requires significant defensive coverage. His versatility would give the manager more options when United face different opponents.

Against teams that dominate possession, Baleba’s defensive qualities could become particularly valuable. His ability to track runners, compete for loose balls and cover spaces could help United remain compact. Against teams that sit deep, his ability to carry the ball could help break the first defensive line.

The transfer would also send an important message to the rest of the Premier League. Manchester United have been attempting to close the gap between themselves and the teams competing consistently for major honours. Signing one of Brighton’s most highly regarded young players would demonstrate that the club remain capable of attracting elite young talent.

However, supporters would be right to remain cautious until the deal is officially confirmed. Despite the latest headline claiming that Manchester United have agreed a deal, the most recent reporting available indicates that United’s position has been more complicated. A report published on August 18 stated that Baleba remained keen on joining Manchester United but that the club had not yet returned to Brighton with an approach or proposal, describing the situation as relatively cold at that point.

That means the reported agreement should be treated as a developing transfer story rather than an officially completed Manchester United signing. Transfer negotiations can change rapidly, particularly during the final weeks of the summer window.

Nevertheless, there is no doubt that Baleba remains a player who could dramatically improve United’s midfield if a deal is eventually completed. His combination of youth, Premier League experience, athleticism and defensive ability makes him an attractive target for a club looking to build a stronger team.

For Brighton, selling Baleba would represent another major piece of business. The club have developed a reputation for identifying talented players, developing them and eventually selling them for significant profits. If Baleba does leave, Brighton will once again have to find a replacement capable of filling the void left by one of their most physically imposing midfielders.

For United, meanwhile, the priority would be ensuring that any agreement works financially as well as sporting-wise. Paying a huge fee simply because of the player’s potential would carry risks, but negotiating a more reasonable package could make the transfer one of the club’s smartest moves of the summer.

The possibility of Baleba joining also raises questions about the future roles of United’s existing midfielders. Competition for places would increase immediately, and that could be exactly what Carrick needs. A squad competing for multiple competitions cannot rely on only a handful of midfield options.

More importantly, Baleba could provide the defensive security that Manchester United have been missing in certain matches. When the midfield is unable to protect the defence, the pressure on the centre-backs increases and the attacking players are forced to contribute more defensively. A powerful ball-winning midfielder can change that dynamic.

Manchester United supporters have repeatedly demanded a midfielder capable of winning possession, covering ground and protecting the defence. Baleba fits that description better than many of the club’s alternative targets.

If the reported agreement is eventually confirmed, his arrival could become one of the defining transfers of Manchester United’s summer. The club would be signing a player they have admired for a long time while simultaneously strengthening one of the most important areas of the squad.

Baleba would also have the opportunity to establish himself as a long-term midfield leader at one of the biggest clubs in world football. The pressure at Old Trafford would be significantly greater than at Brighton, but the rewards would be enormous if he can adapt quickly.

Ultimately, the story remains one to watch closely. Current reporting shows that Manchester United have maintained interest in Baleba, while other Premier League clubs are also monitoring his situation.

If Manchester United truly manage to reach an agreement with Brighton and complete the transfer, it could be a major boost for Carrick’s project. Baleba’s arrival would give United greater physicality, defensive strength and midfield flexibility, while providing the club with a young player who could potentially become a key figure for many years.

For now, supporters will be waiting for the final confirmation. The interest is genuine, the player has previously been strongly linked with Old Trafford, and Brighton’s valuation appears to have become more negotiable than it was previously. But until Manchester United and Brighton officially confirm an agreement, the reported deal should be viewed as a developing transfer claim rather than a completed transfer.

Should the move eventually cross the line, however, Carlos Baleba could become exactly the kind of midfielder Manchester United have been searching for: young, powerful, Premier League-proven and capable of giving the team the defensive foundation needed to compete at the highest level.
