BREAKING: Bruno Fernandes says he can’t play with Carlos Baleba because…see more

Posted on August 20, 2026 by admin

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has reportedly admitted that the potential arrival of Carlos Baleba could force him to make significant adjustments to his role at Old Trafford, with the Cameroon international closing in on a move from Brighton.

United have made Baleba one of their major midfield priorities this summer, and reports indicate that negotiations with Brighton have advanced considerably, with the Premier League club having submitted a bid worth around £65 million for the 22-year-old midfielder.

The proposed signing has generated considerable excitement among Manchester United supporters because Baleba would provide the type of defensive midfield presence the club has been searching for. His arrival would give manager Michael Carrick another physically powerful and energetic option in the centre of the pitch, potentially allowing United to play with greater balance and defensive security. However, the arrival of another high-profile midfielder could also change the responsibilities of several existing players, including Fernandes.

Fernandes has been one of the most influential players at Manchester United since arriving at Old Trafford and has traditionally enjoyed significant freedom in midfield. His ability to move between the lines, create chances, score goals and dictate attacks has made him central to United’s football. The Portuguese international has also enjoyed an outstanding period recently, with reports noting that he produced a record-breaking Premier League assist campaign and was named the division’s Player of the Season.

That is why Baleba’s arrival could represent an important tactical change for Fernandes. Rather than being asked to constantly contribute to defensive responsibilities, the captain could be given more freedom to operate higher up the pitch if Carrick decides to use Baleba as a dedicated defensive midfielder.

Ironically, that could mean Fernandes having to adapt even though the transfer is designed to make his job easier.

Baleba is naturally suited to the deeper midfield role and has been identified as a player capable of giving United additional physicality, ball recovery and protection in front of the defence. Reports have described him as a natural No. 6 and suggested that he could compete with Andrey Santos for a starting position following the departures and restructuring of United’s midfield.

For Fernandes, the challenge would therefore not necessarily be about competing directly with Baleba for the same position. Instead, it would be about understanding how to operate alongside a midfielder whose style is very different from his own.

Fernandes has often been at the heart of United’s midfield movements, dropping deep to receive possession before immediately looking for a forward pass. At other times, he has moved into attacking positions to support the forwards. Baleba’s presence could allow Fernandes to spend more time in those advanced areas, but it could also require him to become more disciplined when United lose possession.

The Portuguese captain may have to resist the temptation to chase the ball everywhere and instead trust Baleba to protect the midfield behind him.

That adjustment could be particularly important under Carrick, who has been working to establish greater balance and stability at Manchester United. The club’s midfield has already undergone considerable changes this summer, with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos joining as part of a wider rebuild. Baleba would represent another major addition to the department.

Fernandes therefore faces a very different midfield environment compared with previous seasons.

For years, United supporters have watched Fernandes carry a huge portion of the team’s creative responsibility. When the midfield struggled to control games, he was often the player expected to produce something special. When United needed a goal, he was expected to take responsibility. When the team needed creativity, he frequently dropped deeper to get involved.

Baleba’s arrival could change that dynamic.

Instead of Fernandes constantly worrying about covering large spaces behind him, he could potentially concentrate on what he does best: creating opportunities and making decisive attacking contributions.

However, that transition would not necessarily happen immediately.

Baleba is still only 22 and would be arriving at one of the biggest clubs in world football. Although he already has Premier League experience with Brighton, playing regularly for Manchester United would bring a completely different level of pressure. He would be expected to perform in front of demanding supporters, compete in the Champions League and help United challenge for major trophies.

United’s interest in Baleba is not new. The club have monitored the midfielder for some time, and earlier reports had already identified him as one of their preferred options for rebuilding the midfield. Sky Sports previously reported that Baleba remained under consideration as United searched for another midfielder.

The latest developments suggest that the long-running pursuit could finally be reaching its decisive stage.

Reports have indicated that United’s offer could reach approximately £65 million, while other reports have suggested a deal could ultimately be worth around £70 million. Brighton had previously valued Baleba considerably higher, but negotiations have progressed after United renewed their efforts to secure the player.

With the transfer potentially approaching completion, attention has naturally turned to how Carrick would fit Baleba into his starting XI.

One possible solution would see Baleba operating as the deepest midfielder, with Fernandes playing further forward. Such an arrangement could allow United to create a more conventional midfield structure, with Baleba responsible for defensive transitions while Fernandes is given greater freedom around the attacking third.

Another possibility would involve Fernandes dropping alongside Baleba during certain phases of possession, creating a midfield partnership capable of controlling games through a combination of physicality, passing and creativity.

That would require Fernandes to understand when to move forward and when to stay deeper.

It is precisely this tactical adaptation that could make Baleba’s arrival such an interesting development for the United captain.

Rather than viewing the signing as a threat, Fernandes could ultimately benefit enormously from it.

The Portuguese midfielder has spent much of his Manchester United career being asked to do almost everything. He has taken set pieces, created chances, scored goals, pressed defenders and frequently attempted to influence matches from deep positions. A midfielder like Baleba could finally give him the security to focus more heavily on attacking.

The physical qualities of the Cameroon international could also help United recover possession more quickly. Baleba’s ability to cover ground and compete for the ball would give Fernandes greater confidence to move into advanced positions without leaving the team completely exposed.

That could result in an even more dangerous Fernandes.

United supporters have already seen how effective their captain can be when he is allowed to concentrate on creativity. His numbers from last season demonstrated his importance to the side, while his leadership remained one of the defining features of United’s revival under Carrick.

The arrival of Baleba could therefore be viewed less as a threat to Fernandes and more as an opportunity for him to evolve.

Nevertheless, Fernandes would still need to accept that he cannot expect the midfield to revolve around him in exactly the same way as before.

United now have more competition and more tactical options.

Tielemans provides technical quality and passing range. Santos offers energy and composure. Kobbie Mainoo remains an important young option. Baleba would add power, ball-winning ability and defensive protection. Together, those players could give Carrick the depth required to rotate his midfield throughout a long Premier League and Champions League campaign.

That could mean Fernandes being rested more frequently as well.

For a player accustomed to being one of the first names on the team sheet, accepting rotation could represent another adjustment. But if United are serious about competing on multiple fronts, managing Fernandes’ workload will be crucial.

The club are returning to the Champions League after a two-year absence, and expectations around the team have increased following their strong previous campaign. Reuters reported that Carrick guided United to a third-place Premier League finish and helped restore confidence and stability at Old Trafford.

The addition of Baleba would therefore come at a time when United are trying to move from rebuilding to competing.

Fernandes would be central to that ambition.

There is also an important psychological element to the situation. Fernandes has been the leader of the dressing room for several years, and the arrival of another major midfielder could alter the balance of personalities within the squad. Baleba is expected to arrive with a significant reputation, particularly because of his performances in the Premier League and the size of the transfer fee involved.

Fernandes would need to help him settle rather than see his arrival as competition.

If anything, the United captain could become one of the most important figures in helping Baleba adapt to life at Old Trafford.

The Cameroon international already knows the Premier League, having made more than 100 appearances for Brighton, but Manchester United would present a different challenge. The expectation to win every week is enormous, while mistakes receive significantly more attention.

Fernandes knows that environment better than almost anyone.

His leadership could therefore prove vital during Baleba’s first months at the club.

At the same time, Baleba could give Fernandes something he has rarely had during his United career: a midfielder whose primary responsibility is protecting the team behind him.

That could transform the captain’s game.

Instead of dropping deep to receive the ball because United lack a reliable defensive midfielder, Fernandes could remain closer to the forwards. Instead of worrying about covering spaces when he presses, he could trust Baleba to provide protection. Instead of attempting to solve every problem himself, he could distribute responsibility across a stronger midfield unit.

This is why the idea that Fernandes might struggle to adapt should not necessarily be interpreted as a negative development.

Adaptation is often necessary when a team improves.

The arrival of Baleba could force Fernandes to change, but it could also make Manchester United a more balanced and competitive side.

The biggest question will be how quickly Carrick can establish the right chemistry between the midfielders.

Baleba’s physical presence, Fernandes’ creativity, Tielemans’ technical quality, Santos’ energy and Mainoo’s versatility give United several different combinations. Carrick will have the difficult task of deciding which combination works best against different opponents.

Against teams that sit deep, Fernandes may need more creative support around him. Against stronger opponents, Baleba’s defensive qualities could become particularly important. In Champions League matches, United may need a midfield capable of switching between defensive discipline and attacking ambition.

That flexibility could become one of the biggest advantages of the new-look midfield.

For Fernandes, the challenge will be embracing the change.

If reports about his concerns over adapting to Baleba’s arrival prove accurate, the situation will need to be handled carefully. But there is a strong argument that the Portuguese captain has more to gain than to lose from the transfer.

Baleba’s arrival could relieve some of the defensive burden that has previously fallen on Fernandes and allow the captain to spend more time in the areas where he can hurt opponents most.

The possibility of a midfield featuring Baleba behind Fernandes is already generating excitement among supporters. The combination could give United a better balance between defensive security and attacking creativity, something the team has struggled to achieve consistently in recent years.

Ultimately, Fernandes’ adaptation may be less about losing his influence and more about changing how he uses it.

He will still be the captain. He will still be one of United’s primary creators. He will still be expected to score important goals and provide leadership in crucial moments.

But with Baleba potentially arriving at Old Trafford, Fernandes may no longer need to be everything for Manchester United.

And that could be the biggest change of all.

The proposed transfer remains one of the major stories surrounding United’s summer window, with reports indicating that negotiations are close and that Baleba has emerged as the club’s preferred solution to strengthen the defensive midfield position.

If the deal is completed, the attention will immediately turn to Carrick’s tactical plans and Fernandes’ response.

For Manchester United, the hope will be that the captain does not see Baleba’s arrival as a problem, but as the missing piece that allows him to become even more influential.

Because if Fernandes can successfully adapt to Baleba and the two midfielders develop a strong understanding, United could possess a midfield capable of competing at the highest level once again.

And for a club preparing for a return to the Champions League, that could prove to be one of the most important developments of the entire season.
