Bruno Fernandes was reportedly furious with Luke Shaw after Manchester United surrendered their lead against Everton in a dramatic Premier League encounter that ended 2-2 at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The Portuguese midfielder was said to be particularly frustrated by United’s defensive organisation, with the team once again conceding two goals despite controlling large periods of the match. However, there is no confirmed report that Fernandes directly blamed Shaw for the goal, so the alleged confrontation should be viewed as speculation rather than an established fact.
Manchester United appeared to have done enough to leave Merseyside with three points after taking the lead twice during an entertaining contest. Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead shortly after half-time before Everton responded through Tyrique George. Benjamin Šeško then restored United’s advantage in the 88th minute, giving Michael Carrick’s side what appeared to be a winning position. The result was particularly frustrating for Fernandes because United had created enough opportunities to put the game beyond Everton. For Fernandes, the issue is not simply about conceding goals. It is about the mentality required to close games. United had reached the 88th minute with a 2-1 advantage and were only moments away from securing an important away victory. Instead, one defensive lapse allowed Everton to find the space and opportunity they needed to produce another equaliser.
The captain would understandably want his defenders to remain disciplined during such moments. When a team is leading away from home in the closing stages, every player has a responsibility to maintain concentration, track runners and prevent the opposition from finding clear shooting opportunities.
That is why any dressing-room frustration following the final whistle would be unsurprising. Fernandes is known for demanding high standards from himself and his teammates, and the result represented another missed opportunity for United. The team had done much of the difficult work by scoring twice, only to surrender the advantage.
There is also an argument that the criticism should not be directed at one player. United’s defensive problems have been collective rather than individual. The midfield must protect the back line, defenders must maintain their positions, and the entire team must react quickly when possession is lost.
