BREAKING: Man Utd lineup va Sabah leaked as Michael Carrick starts…see more

Posted on September 10, 2026 by admin

Manchester United’s starting lineup for tonight’s Champions League clash with Sabah has reportedly been leaked, with Michael Carrick preparing to make a number of changes to his side as the Red Devils finally return to Europe’s biggest club competition at Old Trafford.

The leaked team is already generating plenty of discussion among Manchester United supporters, particularly because Andrey Santos is reportedly expected to be included from the beginning. The Brazilian midfielder has been waiting for an opportunity to establish himself in Carrick’s first-choice plans, and tonight could provide the perfect stage for him to demonstrate why United were prepared to bring him to Old Trafford.

According to the emerging team news, Senne Lammens is expected to start in goal, while Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu could form the defensive line. In midfield, Andrey Santos is reportedly set to feature alongside Kobbie Mainoo, with Bruno Fernandes operating further forward in the attacking midfield role. The front three could consist of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Marcus Rashford.

If that lineup proves correct, Carrick will have chosen a side that combines experience with fresh energy, while also giving several players an opportunity to make an impression on one of the biggest nights of the season.

The most significant selection appears to be Santos. The Brazilian has attracted considerable attention since arriving at Manchester United, and Carrick’s decision to trust him from the start would represent another major step in the midfielder’s development at the club. Santos has only recently joined the squad and is still fighting to establish himself among United’s midfield options, but tonight’s match could be the moment when he begins to change that perception.

Reports have already suggested that Carrick is considering giving his new midfielders Champions League debuts, with Santos and Youri Tielemans among the players discussed in relation to the starting lineup.

Santos starting alongside Mainoo would also give Manchester United a very different midfield profile. Both players are capable of carrying the ball, competing physically and contributing defensively, while Bruno Fernandes would be allowed to concentrate more heavily on creating chances and supporting the attack.

That could be particularly important against Sabah, a side that will arrive at Old Trafford with nothing to lose. The Azerbaijani club are making their Champions League debut and have already made history simply by reaching this stage of the competition. United, however, are under considerably greater pressure because anything less than a convincing victory would immediately raise questions about the team’s ability to compete in Europe.

Carrick has made it clear that Manchester United are not returning to the Champions League simply to enjoy the occasion. The former United midfielder described the competition as special and insisted that his team wants to go as far as possible.

That message makes tonight’s selection particularly interesting. Carrick could have chosen to field his strongest possible XI, but the reported lineup suggests that he is also thinking about the demanding schedule ahead. Manchester City will visit Old Trafford on Sunday for the Manchester derby, giving United less recovery time than their neighbours after City’s Champions League fixture against Porto on Tuesday.

The manager therefore has to find the right balance between rotation and strength.

The reported inclusion of Rashford is another major talking point. The England international was withdrawn early during United’s draw against Everton, and there had been concerns about his availability. However, reports indicate that he returned to training, giving Carrick another attacking option for tonight’s game. Benjamin Sesko is also approaching full fitness after his injury absence, although Carrick may decide not to rush him into another start.

Up front, the combination of Mbeumo, Cunha and Rashford would provide United with plenty of pace and attacking movement. Mbeumo has already established himself as one of the important attacking players in Carrick’s system, while Cunha offers creativity and aggression between the lines.

Rashford, meanwhile, would provide the direct running United have often needed when opponents defend deeply.

The defensive selection is perhaps where the leaked lineup raises the biggest questions.

Luke Shaw’s availability has been one of the major talking points before the game. The left-back missed Wednesday’s training session after being given additional recovery time, although Carrick stressed that his absence was not related to an ongoing injury problem.

If Shaw is left out, Dorgu could be given another opportunity to demonstrate his ability at left-back. The young defender has endured a difficult period at times, but Carrick’s willingness to continue giving him opportunities suggests that the manager still sees him as an important part of United’s future.

At centre-back, Maguire and Heaven could form the partnership. Heaven’s potential involvement would be another interesting development because Carrick has repeatedly shown a willingness to trust younger players when the circumstances allow it.

With Matthijs de Ligt unavailable, United have fewer experienced defensive options than Carrick would ideally like. De Ligt is among the players reported to be missing for the fixture, alongside other absentees including Carlos Baleba and Amad Diallo.

That makes squad depth particularly important.

The goalkeeper position is another area attracting attention. If Lammens starts, it would give the Belgian goalkeeper another opportunity to demonstrate his qualities on one of football’s biggest stages. Champions League football at Old Trafford is a completely different environment from a routine league fixture, and Carrick will want his goalkeeper to show composure from the opening minute.

United cannot afford to underestimate Sabah.

Although the visitors are regarded as heavy underdogs, they have already demonstrated remarkable resilience to reach the Champions League league phase. Their journey has been one of the stories of the qualifying rounds, and they will arrive at Old Trafford believing they can cause a major upset.

For United, the key will be to score early and control the match.

This is where Santos could become particularly important.

The Brazilian midfielder is expected to provide energy in the centre of the pitch and help United move the ball quickly from defence into attack. If he can win possession, break lines with his passing and support Fernandes, United should have enough quality to dominate the match.

But there will also be pressure on him.

Starting a Champions League game at Old Trafford for Manchester United is not an ordinary opportunity. Every mistake will be scrutinised, while every positive action will attract attention. Santos therefore has an opportunity to change the narrative around his Manchester United career with one performance.

Carrick’s decision would also send a message to the rest of the midfield.

United have invested heavily in that area of the squad, bringing in multiple players during the summer in an attempt to address a weakness that has affected the team for several seasons. The club’s transfer business included Santos, Tielemans and Baleba, giving Carrick significantly more options in midfield.

The competition for places is therefore intense.

Santos knows that a strong performance tonight could make it considerably harder for Carrick to leave him out of future matches. A poor display, however, could see him return to the bench once the manager has a fully fit squad available.

That is why tonight’s game could be much more important for Santos than simply another appearance.

For Manchester United as a whole, the match represents the beginning of a new European chapter.

The club has been away from the Champions League for two seasons, and the return to Old Trafford is being viewed as an important milestone in Carrick’s rebuilding project. United finished third in the Premier League last season to secure their place in the competition, but their opening weeks of the new campaign have been inconsistent.

A defeat against Hull City followed by a draw against Everton has left United with questions to answer, and Carrick knows that the Champions League provides another opportunity to change the mood around the club.

A convincing victory tonight would do exactly that.

The leaked lineup appears to suggest that Carrick wants his team to play with attacking intent while also protecting some of his senior players ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby. The challenge will be ensuring that rotation does not result in a lack of intensity.

Bruno Fernandes is likely to remain central to that plan.

Even with changes around him, the Portuguese midfielder remains one of United’s most important players. His ability to create opportunities, deliver set pieces and produce decisive moments could prove crucial if Sabah sit deep and attempt to frustrate the home side.

Mbeumo and Rashford could stretch the visitors from wide areas, while Cunha could operate between the midfield and defence. That would leave Santos and Mainoo responsible for providing the platform from which United’s attackers can operate.

If United establish control early, Carrick could then use the bench to manage the minutes of his key players.

That would be particularly useful with Manchester City coming to Old Trafford just three days later.

The Manchester derby is arguably the bigger immediate challenge in terms of Premier League consequences, but Carrick cannot afford to sacrifice the Champions League. United supporters have waited two years to hear the competition’s anthem at Old Trafford again, and there will be enormous expectations surrounding the opening fixture.

The reported lineup therefore represents a fascinating compromise between ambition and squad management.

Santos gets his opportunity.

Mainoo gets another chance to establish himself.

Younger players such as Heaven could gain valuable European experience.

Meanwhile, experienced figures such as Fernandes and Maguire can provide leadership.

If the leaked team is accurate, Carrick will be hoping that combination is enough to give Manchester United a winning start to their Champions League campaign.

There is also the possibility that the leaked XI could change before kick-off. Predicted and leaked lineups are not official team news, and the final selection will only be confirmed when Manchester United release their starting XI shortly before the match. UEFA’s match centre is also listing the fixture for Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Old Trafford.

But the reports have certainly given supporters plenty to discuss.

The biggest headline remains Santos.

If Carrick really does hand the Brazilian a starting position tonight, the midfielder will have an enormous opportunity to announce himself properly at Manchester United. The Champions League stage is where big players create big moments, and Santos will know that a commanding performance could accelerate his development dramatically.

Manchester United have spent years attempting to rebuild their midfield, and Carrick now has a collection of players capable of changing the team’s identity. Santos could be one of the most important pieces of that project.

Tonight, he gets the opportunity to prove it.

Old Trafford will once again hear the Champions League anthem, Carrick will take charge of Manchester United in Europe’s elite competition, and Santos could be one of the players at the centre of attention.

For United supporters, the hope is simple: a strong performance, three points and the beginning of a European campaign that can finally restore some of the club’s lost prestige.

And if the leaked lineup is correct, Carrick appears ready to trust Andrey Santos with one of the biggest opportunities of his young Manchester United career.
