BREAKING: Kobbie Mainoo submits a transfer request after…see more

Posted on September 16, 2026 by admin

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has once again become the subject of transfer speculation, with renewed questions surrounding his long-term future at Old Trafford despite the England international having previously committed himself to the club.

Mainoo’s Manchester United career has experienced some extraordinary twists over the past year. The academy graduate went from being regarded as one of the club’s most important young players to finding himself on the fringes of the first team under Ruben Amorim, before eventually rebuilding his position under Michael Carrick.

The uncertainty surrounding Mainoo’s future originally emerged because of his lack of playing time. During Amorim’s tenure, the midfielder struggled to establish himself in the manager’s preferred system and was frequently left out of the starting XI. Mainoo later admitted that he had considered his future during that period, although he stressed that his priority had always been to play for Manchester United.

“When you’re not playing many games, or any games, you consider all things,” Mainoo told Sky Sports. However, he also made clear that his desire was to continue playing for the club he had grown up supporting.

That admission demonstrated just how difficult the situation had become.

Mainoo had already established himself as one of the brightest products of Manchester United’s academy. His breakthrough under Erik ten Hag was followed by a memorable 2024 FA Cup final performance against Manchester City, when he scored the winning goal at Wembley.

He also became an important member of England’s squad at Euro 2024, further increasing expectations surrounding his future.

Yet the arrival of Amorim changed the situation dramatically.

Mainoo struggled to find a natural role within Amorim’s system and was unable to establish himself as a regular Premier League starter. At one stage, reports indicated that he wanted to leave on loan in search of regular football, with Napoli among the clubs linked with a move. Manchester United rejected the possibility of allowing him to depart.

The midfielder’s situation changed when Carrick took charge.

Carrick immediately restored Mainoo to a central midfield role, allowing him to play in a position where he had previously demonstrated his quality. Mainoo responded with a series of impressive performances and regained his place in the England setup.

The transformation was so significant that Manchester United eventually secured Mainoo’s long-term future.

In April 2026, the club announced that Mainoo had signed a new contract running until 2031. The agreement ended months of uncertainty and represented a major commitment from both player and club.

That is why any suggestion that Mainoo is currently determined to leave Manchester United needs to be treated carefully.

The midfielder himself has already explained that his previous thoughts about leaving were primarily connected to his lack of opportunities. Once Carrick gave him regular football again, his position changed considerably.

Recent developments have further strengthened the argument that Mainoo remains an important part of Manchester United’s plans.

Carrick has publicly praised the midfielder’s performances, particularly his ability to operate deeper in midfield, connect attacks and influence games. After United’s Champions League victory over Sabah, Carrick described Mainoo as a “fantastic player” and highlighted his desire to learn and improve.

Mainoo has also continued to demonstrate his importance on the pitch.

During United’s recent Manchester derby against Manchester City, he struck the woodwork as United pushed for an equaliser. Reuters reported that United ultimately lost the match 1-0, but Mainoo’s involvement illustrated that he remains part of Carrick’s midfield plans.

Therefore, the current story is less about a confirmed transfer request and more about the importance of maintaining Mainoo’s role in the team.

The midfielder’s previous experience provides an obvious warning for Manchester United.

Mainoo has already experienced what happens when he believes his pathway to regular football has disappeared. His own comments show that playing time is extremely important to him. If his involvement were to decline significantly again, speculation about his future could naturally return.

That is something Manchester United will be keen to avoid.

The club invested heavily in Mainoo’s long-term future by handing him a contract until 2031. That agreement demonstrated that United viewed him as a major part of the club’s future rather than simply another academy graduate.

For Mainoo, however, a long contract does not automatically guarantee happiness.

The midfielder needs to continue playing regularly, developing his game and maintaining his position within Carrick’s plans. He is now 21 and at an important stage of his career, particularly with international football also a major consideration.

His experience under Amorim demonstrated that even a long-term contract cannot prevent questions about a player’s future if he is consistently left out of the team.

Manchester United’s midfield has also changed significantly.

The club have strengthened the position with new arrivals, increasing competition for places. Players such as Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have joined the midfield group, while Mason Mount remains another option for Carrick. Carlos Baleba is also expected to add further competition once available.

That competition could ultimately be positive for Mainoo, but it also means he will have to continue performing at a high level.

For Carrick, the challenge will be finding the right balance between Mainoo and the club’s other midfielders.

Mainoo’s greatest strength has often been his ability to receive the ball under pressure, move through midfield and connect different phases of play. His performances under Carrick have shown that he can influence matches from a deeper position while still contributing to attacking moves.

Carrick appears to recognise those qualities.

The manager’s public comments about Mainoo suggest that the player remains firmly within his plans. Rather than treating him as a squad player waiting for an opportunity, Carrick has spoken about his influence and development in positive terms.

That makes a current departure less straightforward than some transfer rumours might suggest.

Nevertheless, Mainoo’s previous comments will continue to provide fuel for speculation whenever his playing time decreases.

Manchester United supporters have already seen how quickly circumstances can change.

A player who looked destined to become one of the club’s most important academy graduates suddenly found himself considering his options. Then, following a managerial change, he became one of the team’s regular starters and eventually signed a new long-term contract.

The story therefore serves as a reminder that a footballer’s future can change dramatically depending on the manager, tactical system and opportunities available.

For now, Mainoo’s immediate focus appears to be on establishing himself under Carrick rather than forcing an exit.

His new contract until 2031 is the clearest evidence of that commitment. His improved performances and Carrick’s public support provide further evidence that his Manchester United career has entered a different phase.

But the midfielder’s previous experience means the club cannot afford to become complacent.

Mainoo wants to play.

He wants to develop.

And he wants to be an important player for Manchester United.

As long as those ambitions continue to align with the club’s plans, there is little reason to expect an immediate departure.

The real test will come if that relationship changes again.

For Manchester United, keeping Mainoo happy and involved could be just as important as the contract he has signed. The midfielder represents years of academy development and has already demonstrated that he can perform at the highest level.

For Mainoo, meanwhile, the objective is clear: continue developing, remain central to Carrick’s plans and prove that the difficult period under Amorim was only a temporary setback.

The latest evidence points toward Mainoo remaining at Manchester United rather than actively seeking an exit. But given everything that has happened over the past year, any future decline in his playing time will inevitably bring his long-term future back into the spotlight.
