BREAKING: Michael Carrick confirmed Lisandro Martinez was totally…see more

Posted on September 20, 2026 by admin

Michael Carrick has reportedly been left unhappy with Lisandro Martínez’s performance after the Manchester United defender’s costly mistake contributed to Fulham taking the lead in Sunday’s Premier League clash at Craven Cottage.

Manchester United were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against Fulham after Matheus Cunha rescued a point with a late equaliser. However, much of the attention after the match was focused on Martínez following the unfortunate own goal that handed Fulham the advantage.

The result was another frustrating afternoon for Carrick and his players. United entered the match looking for a response after consecutive defeats against Manchester City and Brighton, but instead produced another inconsistent display and left London with only one point.

Martínez’s moment of misfortune came shortly after the hour mark.

Fulham’s Calvin Bassey produced an effort that was saved by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, but the rebound fell directly into Martínez’s path. The Argentine attempted to deal with the danger, only for the ball to ricochet off him and end up in his own net.

The goal gave Fulham a 1–0 advantage and immediately placed United under pressure.

For Carrick, the incident would have been particularly frustrating because United had managed to keep Fulham from scoring during a first half in which both teams had opportunities. Once Fulham took the lead, however, United had to chase the game.

Martínez was visibly devastated by the mistake. Match coverage reported that the defender appeared distraught on the pitch, with his head in his hands as he reacted to what had happened.

Although the goal was unfortunate rather than a straightforward defensive error, the incident highlighted the lack of composure that has occasionally hurt United during their difficult start to the campaign.

Carrick will understand that mistakes happen in football. Nevertheless, the manager will also expect his defenders to react quickly and maintain concentration, particularly during periods when the opposition begins to gain momentum.

The timing of Martínez’s mistake made the situation even more difficult.

United had struggled to create enough clear opportunities after the interval, while Fulham began to look increasingly dangerous. Once the home side found the breakthrough, Carrick had to make changes in an attempt to rescue the match.

Martínez’s performance will therefore be one of the issues examined by the manager following the final whistle.

The Argentine remains an important player for Manchester United because of his ability to defend aggressively, play out from the back and contribute to the team’s build-up. However, Carrick will want a much more reliable performance from him in future matches.

The situation was made more frustrating because United eventually had to rely on a fortunate equaliser.

With the match heading towards defeat, Cunha produced an effort in the 89th minute that took a deflection before beating Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno. The goal rescued United from what would have been their third defeat in a single week.

That late goal prevented Martínez’s mistake from becoming the decisive reason for another United defeat.

However, Carrick will know that simply avoiding defeat is not enough for a Manchester United side expected to challenge at the top end of the Premier League.

United have now won only one of their opening five league matches, increasing scrutiny on Carrick and his players heading into the international break.

The manager therefore has several areas to address.

Defensive concentration will certainly be one of them.

Martínez is not expected to take all the blame for the draw because United’s problems against Fulham extended beyond one unfortunate incident. The team created opportunities but struggled to convert them, while Fulham controlled significant periods of the second half.

Nevertheless, Martínez’s own goal became the defining moment of the match.

Carrick will expect his experienced defenders to remain calm when dealing with dangerous situations inside the penalty area. Even when a mistake is accidental, the reaction that follows can be important.

For Martínez, the best response will be on the pitch.

The Argentine has previously demonstrated his ability to recover from difficult moments, and Carrick is unlikely to want one unfortunate incident to define his entire assessment of the defender.

But the Manchester United manager will demand improvement.

United cannot afford to repeatedly give opponents opportunities to take control of matches. Their recent results have already created pressure, and another defensive mistake could prove even more damaging in the coming fixtures.

The draw at Fulham ultimately provided United with some relief, but it did not completely solve the problems surrounding Carrick’s team.

The manager now has the international break to analyse the performance, identify the reasons behind United’s defensive struggles and decide how to improve the team’s consistency.

Martínez, meanwhile, will have to put the own goal behind him and focus on returning to his best level.

Carrick’s message to his squad is likely to be clear: individual mistakes cannot become recurring problems.

Manchester United need greater concentration, greater consistency and better decision-making across the pitch.

Against Fulham, Martínez’s unfortunate own goal placed his team in serious danger of another defeat. Cunha’s late equaliser eventually rescued the point, but Carrick will know that United cannot continue relying on late goals and fortune to avoid dropping points.

For Martínez, the challenge is now to respond strongly in the next match and show why he remains an important part of Carrick’s Manchester United plans.
