DAVID RAYA UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT: DID HIS PERFORMANCE CONTRIBUTE TO ARSENAL’S SHOCKING 3-0 DEFEAT?
Arsenal supporters woke up disappointed after watching their team suffer a painful 3-0 defeat to Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.
The Gunners arrived in confident form after winning their opening seven games in all competitions, but everything changed against Brighton. Arsenal struggled to deal with the home side’s intensity, pressing and attacking movement, eventually suffering their first defeat of the season.
But among the many talking points from the match, one name has attracted particular attention from Arsenal supporters: David Raya.
The Spanish goalkeeper was involved in several difficult moments during the game, and some fans will question whether Arsenal could have defended the goals better.

The goal highlighted another defensive problem for the Gunners, with Arsenal failing to close down Brighton quickly enough. Opta’s analysis noted that both Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhães backed away from Kostoulas before the shot. Then came Brighton’s third goal.
Chema Andrés rose to meet Groß’s corner and headed the ball home early in the second half. Arsenal failed to prevent the Brighton midfielder from finding space in the area, and Raya was unable to keep the header out.
However, blaming Raya alone would not tell the complete story. Arsenal’s entire team struggled.
Mikel Arteta admitted after the match that his players had not performed at the required level and said Brighton had shown more intensity and “bite.” He also described the defeat as a lesson for his team.
Brighton’s pressing caused Arsenal problems from the opening stages. The Gunners repeatedly struggled to play out from the back, and Brighton created several opportunities that could have produced an even bigger scoreline.
That is why the debate around Raya needs to be balanced.
A goalkeeper can make mistakes, but he also depends heavily on the players in front of him. Arsenal conceded three times, yet the defending around those goals was also questioned.
The defeat therefore raises a bigger question for Arteta: Was this simply one bad afternoon, or did Brighton expose weaknesses Arsenal need to fix?
For a team defending the Premier League title, this is exactly the kind of performance that will generate serious discussion.
Arsenal now have the international break to analyse what went wrong before returning to action. The players will have time to reflect, while Arteta and his coaching staff will have to work out how to prevent another performance like this.
One defeat does not erase everything Arsenal have done well at the beginning of the season.But the 3-0 scoreline is impossible to ignore.
The Gunners were beaten in almost every important area of the game, and Brighton deserved the victory.
