Arsenal Have Time to Respond After Brighton Defeat as International Break Begins

Arsenal have been given valuable time to regroup after their disappointing 3–0 defeat to Brighton, with the international break providing Mikel Arteta and his players an opportunity to reflect on what went wrong at the Amex Stadium.

The defeat brought an abrupt end to Arsenal’s impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign. Before travelling to Brighton, the Gunners had won seven consecutive matches in all competitions. However, that perfect run came to an end as Brighton produced a strong performance and scored three goals against the reigning Premier League champions.

Pascal Groß opened the scoring for Brighton before Charalampos Kostoulas doubled the home side’s advantage. Chema Andrés then added a third goal early in the second half, leaving Arsenal with a difficult afternoon and no way back into the contest.

For Arteta, the defeat was not simply about the final score. The Arsenal manager acknowledged that Brighton deserved the victory and criticised his team’s performance, particularly their failure to win important duels and deal with Brighton’s direct approach.

Arteta also pointed to technical errors when Arsenal had possession. According to his post-match assessment, the team struggled to escape Brighton’s pressure and did not perform at the standards required in the Premier League.

The timing of the international break could therefore be important for Arsenal. Instead of immediately having to respond to the defeat in another competitive match, the club has a period in which players and coaching staff can analyse the performance, while injured players can continue their recovery.

Not every Arsenal player will be resting during the break, however. A number of first-team players have joined their national teams, meaning Arteta will have to wait for the international fixtures to finish before having his full squad back together.

Arsenal’s next listed Premier League fixture is against Leeds United at Emirates Stadium on October 10, giving the team a significant period to prepare for its response. The club’s official fixture information lists the match for a 12:30 kick-off, although supporters are advised that fixtures can be subject to change.

The Brighton defeat does not erase Arsenal’s strong opening to the campaign, but it does give Arteta plenty to work on. The manager has already described the result as a lesson for his players, and Arsenal will now have to show how they respond when competitive football returns.

For Arsenal supporters, the biggest question is whether the Brighton defeat was an isolated poor performance or a sign of problems that need to be addressed. The answer will begin to emerge when the Gunners return to action.
