BREAKING: Carlo Ancelotti banished…see more

Posted on October 1, 2026 by admin

Carlo Ancelotti has sent a strong message to Matheus Cunha as the Manchester United forward finds himself outside Brazil’s plans for the opening stage of the new international cycle, with the decision raising serious questions about when the striker could return to the Seleção.

Cunha was part of Brazil’s squad at the 2026 World Cup and played an important role during the tournament, but his name was missing when Ancelotti announced his first squad following Brazil’s disappointing campaign in North America. The decision immediately attracted attention because Cunha had been one of the forwards trusted by the Italian coach during the World Cup.

Brazil have now entered a new cycle following their World Cup elimination, and Ancelotti has made it clear that his immediate priority is to build a team capable of competing at the 2028 Copa América and the 2030 World Cup. The Brazilian Football Confederation reported that Ancelotti wants to use the coming years to identify younger players and develop a new generation for the national team.

That strategy has already resulted in major changes to the squad.

Of the 26 players who represented Brazil at the 2026 World Cup, 17 were left out of Ancelotti’s first post-World Cup squad. Cunha was among the notable absentees, while players such as Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Endrick and Bruno Guimarães remained part of the group.

The decision is particularly interesting because Cunha had been given significant responsibility during the World Cup. Ancelotti praised the Manchester United forward after Brazil’s victory over Haiti, highlighting his contribution to the team’s attacking play.

Cunha also scored three goals during Brazil’s World Cup campaign, according to reporting surrounding his subsequent omission from the squad. His absence from the next international selection therefore represents a significant change in direction rather than simply the continuation of his previous role.

Ancelotti’s message, however, appears to be bigger than one player.

The Italian manager has made it clear that he wants to use this period to discover players who could become important figures for Brazil in the future. Speaking ahead of Brazil’s September friendly, Ancelotti explained that the priority was to construct a new generation of footballers capable of accompanying the national team into the next major tournaments.

That approach could make the competition for places extremely intense.

Cunha is now competing against several other forwards for a place in Brazil’s attacking department. Endrick was retained, while João Pedro and Pedro were brought into the latest squad. Ancelotti also spoke positively about Endrick’s potential, saying the Real Madrid striker could become an important player for Brazil in the future.

The situation means Cunha cannot simply assume that his previous position within the national team will remain unchanged.

Brazil have already shown that they are prepared to experiment. During the 2026 World Cup cycle, several different players were tested in the centre-forward position, with Cunha eventually establishing himself as one of the options. Ancelotti now appears interested in evaluating other solutions before making long-term decisions about his attack.

For Cunha, the timing could therefore be extremely important.

The Manchester United forward now has an opportunity to respond through his club performances. International managers regularly select players based on form, fitness, tactical suitability and competition for positions, meaning a strong run of performances at club level could put Cunha back into contention.

At the same time, the emergence of other Brazilian forwards means the player cannot afford to become complacent.

João Pedro is one of the clearest examples. The Chelsea striker was surprisingly left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad despite an impressive debut season in England, but Ancelotti subsequently brought him back into the national-team picture. His return demonstrates how quickly the situation can change when a player performs consistently at club level.

That development could be viewed as both a warning and an opportunity for Cunha.

The warning is obvious: places in the Brazil squad are not guaranteed. The opportunity is equally clear: Cunha can force his way back into Ancelotti’s plans by producing performances that make his omission increasingly difficult to justify.

The Manchester United forward already has experience at international level, and his involvement at the 2026 World Cup means he understands exactly what Ancelotti expects from his attacking players.

During the World Cup, Ancelotti praised Cunha’s ability to create problems for opposing defenders. Against Haiti, the coach explained that Cunha’s positioning was useful for creating problems for the opposition defence and praised his passing contribution.

That makes the current situation fascinating.

Rather than suggesting that Cunha has suddenly become irrelevant to Brazil, his omission appears to be part of a broader rebuilding process. Ancelotti is examining several players and attempting to establish which footballers can form the core of the team for the next major international cycle.

The coach has also indicated that some players who were not included in the current squad could still be monitored. His comments about following young players and assessing their development suggest that the door is not necessarily permanently closed on players who miss a particular squad.

For Cunha, therefore, the challenge is to remain focused on his club career.

Manchester United supporters will be watching the situation closely because Cunha’s performances for the club could have a direct impact on his chances of returning to the Brazil setup. The forward arrived at Old Trafford with significant expectations and has already been trusted in important matches.

A productive period in the Premier League could give him the platform he needs to make his case again.

The competition, however, will remain intense.

Brazil possess an enormous pool of attacking talent, and Ancelotti has already demonstrated that reputation alone will not determine every selection. The Italian coach has shown a willingness to make significant changes, particularly as he attempts to prepare Brazil for the next generation of international football.

For Cunha, this means the road back to the national team may require consistency rather than simply waiting for another opportunity.

There is also an important distinction between being omitted from one squad and being permanently discarded. At this stage, the available evidence does not establish that Ancelotti has ruled Cunha out for a prolonged period. Instead, the evidence shows that the striker has been left out of the first squad of the new cycle while Ancelotti evaluates alternatives.

That distinction will be important in the months ahead.

If Cunha performs strongly for Manchester United, his situation could change quickly. If younger forwards continue to impress and establish themselves, however, competition for his position could become increasingly difficult.

Ancelotti’s rebuilding project has effectively reset the competition for places in Brazil’s national team.

Cunha therefore finds himself in an unusual position. He is a World Cup player who contributed goals and performances for Brazil only months ago, yet he is now outside the squad as the manager begins building a new team.

The next stage of his career could determine how quickly he returns.

For Manchester United, the situation could also provide additional motivation for Cunha. International football remains an important ambition for elite players, and missing out on Brazil selection can increase the desire to perform at the highest possible level for one’s club.

Cunha’s response will now be watched closely.

Rather than focusing on the disappointment of missing the latest Brazil squad, the forward has the opportunity to use his Manchester United performances as the strongest possible answer.

Ancelotti has made his priorities clear: Brazil want to identify the players capable of leading the national team toward the 2028 Copa América and the 2030 World Cup.

Whether Matheus Cunha becomes part of that future will depend largely on how he performs during the new international cycle.

For now, the door to Brazil has not been officially closed. But the message from Ancelotti’s squad selection is clear: Cunha will have to compete for his place again, just like every other player.

And if the Manchester United forward can respond with goals, assists and consistent performances, the conversation surrounding his Brazil future could change very quickly.
