BREAKING: Michael Carrick banished…see more

Posted on October 1, 2026 by admin

Michael Carrick has made it clear that Marcus Rashford must continue to improve and prove his value at Manchester United as the England international begins another chapter of his Old Trafford career following an extended period away from the club.

Rashford’s return to Manchester United has been one of the most intriguing stories surrounding the club, particularly after spending the previous campaign on loan at Barcelona. The forward had been away from Old Trafford for around 18 months before returning to Carrington and being reintegrated into the first-team squad under Carrick.

While there have been suggestions that Carrick could eventually lose patience with Rashford if the forward fails to reproduce his best form, there is currently no confirmed statement from the United head coach saying Rashford will be “banished” if he does not improve.

In fact, Carrick’s recent public comments have been considerably more positive.

The United manager praised Rashford’s return to training and said the forward had come back in excellent physical condition. Carrick described his return as “fantastically well” and indicated that Rashford looked ready to compete again for his place in the team.

However, that does not mean Rashford’s position at Manchester United is guaranteed.

The 28-year-old is returning to a team that has changed considerably since his last Premier League appearance for the club. During his absence, Manchester United have brought in new attacking players and have continued to reshape their squad.

Rashford therefore has to compete for his position.

That competition could be particularly intense because Carrick has several attacking options available to him. Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and other forwards provide different tactical possibilities, meaning Rashford cannot simply rely on his previous status at Old Trafford.

Carrick has already indicated that his selection decisions will depend partly on the opposition and the balance he wants from his team. When discussing his forward options, he explained that Cunha and Sesko bring different threats, while also praising Rashford’s ability to cause problems for opponents.

That approach could prove crucial to Rashford’s future.

The England international has already experienced what happens when a Manchester United manager loses faith in him. Under Ruben Amorim, his relationship with the club deteriorated and he eventually left on loan, first joining Aston Villa and subsequently Barcelona.

His spell in Spain, however, gave him the opportunity to rebuild his confidence.

Rashford reportedly produced 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona during the previous campaign, including nine goal contributions in 11 Champions League appearances. Those numbers demonstrated that the forward remains capable of performing at a high level when placed in an environment where he feels comfortable and confident.

That is one of the reasons Carrick’s decision to welcome him back has attracted so much attention.

Unlike some previous managers, Carrick already knows Rashford extremely well. He worked with the player during his earlier coaching roles at Manchester United and was also briefly the club’s caretaker manager.

Carrick was part of the coaching structure when Rashford emerged as one of the most exciting young players at Old Trafford. That history could give the manager a better understanding of what the forward needs to produce his best football.

Carrick has also publicly maintained that Rashford is still a Manchester United player.

When asked about the situation earlier in the summer, Carrick made it clear that Rashford remained part of the club while acknowledging that decisions about his future would eventually have to be made.

That means the current situation is considerably different from the one Rashford experienced under Amorim.

The door is open.

But the door being open does not mean Rashford has been handed a permanent starting position.

The forward must now demonstrate that he deserves to remain at the heart of Carrick’s plans.

That means improving his consistency, maintaining his intensity and showing that he can contribute when Manchester United are struggling rather than only when the team is performing well.

This is particularly important because expectations at Old Trafford remain enormous.

Rashford is a product of the Manchester United academy and has already established himself as one of the club’s leading goalscorers. Supporters therefore expect considerably more from him than they would from an inexperienced youngster.

His ability has rarely been questioned.

The real question has been consistency.

When Rashford is playing with confidence, he can be one of the most dangerous attackers in the Premier League. His pace allows him to attack defenders directly, while his ability to cut inside from the left gives United another route toward goal.

His finishing can also be devastating.

But when his confidence drops, his performances can become less influential, particularly when opponents prevent him from attacking space behind the defence.

That is where Carrick’s management could become important.

The United boss appears willing to give Rashford another opportunity, but the player must respond by delivering consistently on the pitch.

His return against former manager Amorim’s AC Milan was one of the major talking points of United’s pre-season. Rashford was brought on during the second half as he began his comeback after his long absence from the club.

Carrick subsequently continued to speak positively about him.

After Rashford started against Ipswich, Carrick said he was particularly pleased with the forward’s performance and believed he would continue to improve. The manager’s comments suggested that United were seeing encouraging signs from the player rather than preparing to discard him.

Nevertheless, football can change quickly.

A player can move from being a key part of the manager’s plans to competing for a place within a matter of weeks.

Rashford therefore knows that his opportunity at Manchester United must be taken seriously.

There is also another factor that could influence his future: the emergence of younger players.

Manchester United have several young attacking talents coming through the system, and the club will eventually have to decide how much responsibility to give them. Rashford’s experience could be extremely valuable, but experience alone will not guarantee him minutes.

If he performs, he strengthens his position.

If he struggles, competition will increase.

That is the reality facing the England international.

Carrick’s approach appears to be based on giving players opportunities while expecting them to justify that trust. Rashford has received his opportunity.

Now the responsibility is with the player.

The most encouraging part of the story for Rashford is that Carrick has not publicly closed the door on him. Quite the opposite: the manager has repeatedly spoken positively about his return and has welcomed the experience and attacking quality that Rashford brings to the squad.

That gives Rashford an important advantage.

He is not returning to a manager who has already decided against him.

He is returning to a manager who appears prepared to give him another chance.

But the opportunity comes with expectations.

Rashford has to show that he can become a dependable player for Manchester United again.

He has to show that the performances seen during his successful period at Barcelona were not temporary.

He has to show that he can handle the pressure of playing for his boyhood club.

And perhaps most importantly, he has to show that he can consistently contribute when Manchester United need him most.

Carrick will ultimately have to make difficult decisions.

If Rashford performs at the level expected of him, there will be little reason for the manager to leave him out. If his performances decline, however, the competition within the squad means Carrick has alternatives.

That is why every match could become important for Rashford.

His return is not simply about scoring goals.

It is about demonstrating discipline, work rate, tactical understanding, consistency and leadership.

At 28, Rashford is no longer the teenager who burst onto the scene against Midtjylland and Arsenal. He is now one of the senior figures in the Manchester United dressing room.

Young players will look at him.

Supporters will expect leadership from him.

And Carrick will expect him to set an example.

The coming months could therefore be extremely important for Rashford’s Manchester United career.

There is no confirmed evidence that Carrick has threatened to banish him, but the competitive reality is clear: Rashford has to perform if he wants to remain a central figure in the manager’s plans.

Carrick has opened the door.

Now Rashford has to walk through it.

Manchester United have given their academy graduate another opportunity to rebuild his relationship with the club, and his response on the pitch will ultimately determine how long that opportunity lasts.

For a player with Rashford’s ability and experience, the objective is simple: stay fit, stay focused, work hard and consistently produce.

If he can do that, his second chapter at Old Trafford could become one of the most interesting stories of the Carrick era.

If he cannot, the competition for attacking positions means the manager has other options.

For now, however, Carrick’s message is one of opportunity rather than exile.

Rashford is back.

The manager is backing him.

And the next move belongs to the player.
