BREAKING: Ousmane Dembele says Man City defence is too….see more

Posted on October 15, 2026 by admin

Ousmane Dembélé has reportedly expressed concerns about Manchester City’s defensive structure, claiming that the Premier League giants leave too much space at the back when committing players forward in attack.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward believes that despite City’s impressive quality in possession and their ability to dominate opponents, their defensive organisation can become vulnerable when teams attack quickly and exploit the spaces left behind.

Manchester City have built their reputation on controlling matches through possession, aggressive pressing and intelligent movement. However, Dembélé believes that these strengths can sometimes become weaknesses, particularly when opponents manage to escape City’s press and launch dangerous counterattacks. According to this assessment, City’s determination to maintain control and push players forward can leave their defenders exposed against teams with pace, creativity and the ability to make decisive runs into open spaces.

Dembélé is widely recognised for his exceptional dribbling ability, acceleration and unpredictability in one-on-one situations. These qualities make him particularly dangerous against defensive systems that leave large spaces between defenders. The French international can attack either flank, change direction quickly and create opportunities without needing much time on the ball. Against a team like Manchester City, such qualities could become especially important if he finds opportunities to run at defenders who are isolated.

The main concern surrounding City’s defensive approach is the space that can appear behind their back line when they push high up the pitch. While this approach allows them to recover possession quickly and keep opponents under pressure, it also creates opportunities for attackers to exploit the area behind the defence. A well-timed through ball or a quick transition can force City’s defenders to turn towards their own goal and defend large areas of space.

For a player like Dembélé, these situations can be extremely dangerous. His ability to accelerate past opponents and combine with teammates in tight spaces could allow him to take advantage of defensive mistakes. If City lose possession while several players are committed to an attacking move, opponents may find opportunities to attack before the defensive midfielders can recover their positions.

Nevertheless, City’s defensive vulnerabilities should not be exaggerated. Their high defensive line is a deliberate tactical choice rather than necessarily a sign of poor defending. When executed correctly, it allows the team to compress the pitch, restrict opponents’ passing options and maintain pressure in the opposition’s half. The challenge comes when opponents successfully bypass the first line of pressure and force the defenders to defend situations with limited protection.

Dembélé’s reported assessment also highlights the importance of midfield control in matches involving elite European teams. When City dominate possession, their opponents can spend long periods defending deep, making it difficult to find opportunities to attack. However, when possession changes hands, the ability to move the ball forward quickly can become a decisive weapon. Teams that combine accurate passing with intelligent movement may be able to exploit the spaces left by City’s attacking structure.

Manchester City’s defenders must therefore remain alert even when their team is controlling the match. Communication, positioning and anticipation become particularly important when facing forwards who can accelerate into open spaces. A moment of hesitation or a misplaced pass could allow an opponent to create a dangerous opportunity.

For Pep Guardiola’s side, the solution would not necessarily be to abandon their attacking philosophy. Instead, maintaining a better balance between attack and defence could help reduce the risks associated with their aggressive approach. Midfielders can provide additional protection, defenders can adjust their positioning depending on the situation, and the team can become more selective about when to commit players forward.

Dembélé’s comments, if accurately reported, would add another dimension to the discussion about City’s tactical approach. Their attacking quality is rarely in doubt, but opponents will always search for weaknesses they can exploit. Against forwards with Dembélé’s pace and technical ability, even a small amount of defensive space can become a significant problem.

Ultimately, Manchester City’s ability to respond to such criticism will depend on how effectively they balance their attacking ambitions with defensive discipline. Their possession-based style remains one of their greatest strengths, but the finest teams understand that controlling the ball is only part of the battle.

If opponents can consistently escape City’s pressing and attack the space behind their defence, the English side could find themselves facing uncomfortable situations. However, if City maintain their structure, recover possession quickly and protect their back line effectively, they can limit those opportunities.

For now, the suggestion that Manchester City’s defence is too open provides an interesting talking point ahead of their next major challenge. Whether that perceived weakness becomes a genuine problem will depend on the quality of their opponents, the effectiveness of their tactical preparation and their ability to prevent dangerous counterattacks.
