BREAKING: Pep Guardiola has warned Enzo Maresca never to…..see more

Posted on October 16, 2026 by admin

Pep Guardiola has reportedly warned that Manchester City could suffer serious consequences this season if Enzo Maresca continues to leave Ayyoub Bouaddi on the bench, with the former City manager believed to be concerned about the team’s balance, midfield control and ability to compete against Europe’s strongest opponents.

The discussion surrounding Bouaddi’s role has intensified following City’s disappointing 4-2 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, a match that exposed several weaknesses in the team’s first-half performance before changes at the break helped them fight their way back into the contest.

Although Guardiola’s alleged warning has not been independently verified, the debate surrounding Bouaddi’s importance has become increasingly significant. The young midfielder’s introduction against PSG coincided with an improvement in City’s performance, raising questions about whether Maresca should consider giving him more opportunities in the starting lineup.

Manchester City entered the PSG encounter with high expectations, but the opening 45 minutes proved extremely difficult. PSG took advantage of City’s problems in midfield, moved the ball confidently and created dangerous opportunities that left the home side struggling to establish control. By half-time, City were three goals behind, and the team’s inability to disrupt PSG’s attacking rhythm had become a major concern.

Maresca responded by making three substitutions at the interval, including introducing Bouaddi. The changes helped City approach the second half with greater urgency and a different midfield structure. Although PSG eventually secured a 4-2 victory, City’s improved attacking performance after the break gave supporters reasons to question whether Bouaddi should have started the match.

The young midfielder appeared to offer City something they had been missing during the opening period: additional support in the centre of the pitch. His presence helped provide Elliott Anderson with more assistance, while Enzo Fernández gained greater freedom to contribute to attacking moves.

This raised an important tactical question for Maresca. If Bouaddi can help improve the team’s balance against elite opposition, should the manager reconsider his preference for other midfield combinations?

Guardiola, who established Manchester City as one of Europe’s dominant teams during his time in charge, understands the importance of midfield control better than most managers. His footballing philosophy has consistently emphasised the need for players who can retain possession, recognise danger, maintain positional discipline and help their teammates operate effectively.

From that perspective, Bouaddi’s potential importance goes beyond his individual technical ability. A midfielder’s contribution is not always measured by goals and assists. Sometimes, the most valuable player is the one who helps the entire team function more effectively by occupying the right positions, providing passing options and preventing opponents from finding dangerous spaces.

Against PSG, City struggled to maintain that balance during the first half. Their midfield appeared vulnerable as the visitors moved through the central areas and connected their attacking players with impressive speed. PSG’s ability to combine technical quality with intelligent movement made it difficult for City to regain control.

The introduction of Bouaddi offered Maresca an opportunity to change the situation. With additional support in midfield, City were able to compete more effectively and move the ball into attacking areas with greater purpose. The improvement did not erase the problems that had developed earlier in the match, but it demonstrated why the young midfielder’s role deserves serious consideration.

One of the biggest challenges facing Maresca is finding the right balance between his talented midfielders. Elliott Anderson offers energy and ball-carrying ability, while Enzo Fernández provides passing quality and the ability to contribute to attacking situations. However, selecting talented individuals does not automatically guarantee that the team will function as a cohesive unit.

The manager must consider how those players complement one another. A midfield containing several creative footballers can still struggle if nobody provides sufficient defensive protection or maintains the positional discipline needed to prevent counterattacks.

This is where Bouaddi could become particularly important. If his positioning, awareness and ability to support possession allow Anderson and Fernández to perform their roles more effectively, his inclusion could benefit the entire team rather than simply improving one position.

For Guardiola, midfield structure has always been central to building successful teams. His Manchester City sides frequently relied on players who could control the tempo, protect the defence and make intelligent decisions under pressure. When those responsibilities were performed correctly, City could dominate possession while limiting the opportunities available to their opponents.

Maresca now faces the challenge of establishing his own version of that balance. He has inherited a squad filled with talented players, but the PSG defeat demonstrated that individual quality must be supported by an effective tactical structure.

The question is whether Bouaddi should become a regular part of that structure.

There is a strong argument for giving the young midfielder more opportunities, particularly in matches where City expect to face intense pressure in the middle of the pitch. Starting Bouaddi could allow Maresca to establish greater stability from the beginning rather than waiting until half-time to make adjustments.

However, one improved performance does not automatically mean that a young player should start every match. Managers must consider consistency, tactical discipline, fitness and the demands of different opponents. Bouaddi still needs opportunities to demonstrate that he can maintain his level over a longer period and handle the pressure that comes with regular first-team football.

Nevertheless, leaving him on the bench in every important match could prevent City from discovering how effective he might become alongside Anderson and Fernández. Young players often need consistent opportunities to develop an understanding with their teammates, and that understanding can be difficult to establish when their appearances are limited.

For Bouaddi himself, the situation presents both an opportunity and a challenge. He must continue demonstrating that he can contribute positively whenever selected, while remaining patient as he adapts to the demands of playing for a club competing for major trophies.

His response to limited playing time could become an important part of his development. Training consistently, learning from experienced teammates and understanding Maresca’s tactical expectations will all be necessary if he wants to establish himself as a regular starter.

At the same time, Maresca must recognise that managing a talented young player requires more than occasional substitutions. If Bouaddi is considered an important part of City’s future, he needs a clear development plan that gives him opportunities to improve without placing unnecessary pressure on his shoulders.

The situation also highlights the difficult decisions involved in managing a squad of Manchester City’s size. Every selection choice involves balancing immediate results against long-term development, and the consequences can become particularly visible when the team loses an important match.

Against PSG, City’s second-half improvement suggested that the changes made at the interval were useful. However, the fact that they had already conceded three goals raised questions about whether the original starting lineup had provided the right balance.

It would be premature to conclude that Bouaddi alone could have prevented the defeat. PSG played exceptionally well, and their attacking quality was a major factor in the result. Nevertheless, City’s performance provides a legitimate reason to examine whether their midfield selection needs to change in certain high-pressure fixtures.

If Maresca continues selecting a midfield combination that struggles to control games against elite opponents, City could encounter similar difficulties in future Champions League matches. Conversely, if Bouaddi earns a regular place and helps improve the team’s structure, his development could become an important positive for the club.

Guardiola’s alleged warning captures the growing debate surrounding City’s midfield and the decisions Maresca must make as the season progresses. The former manager knows how important it is for Manchester City to remain competitive in the Premier League and Champions League, where small tactical weaknesses can have significant consequences.

Ultimately, the decision belongs to Maresca. He must assess Bouaddi’s performances in training, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of his available midfielders and determine which combinations give City the best chance of controlling matches.

If Ayyoub Bouaddi continues demonstrating that he can improve Manchester City’s midfield balance, Maresca may find it increasingly difficult to justify keeping him on the bench in the biggest games.

City cannot afford to ignore valuable solutions within their own squad, especially when competing against opponents capable of exploiting weaknesses in midfield. The challenge for Maresca is to identify the right combination before those problems cost his team more important results.

For Bouaddi, the opportunity is clear: keep performing, continue developing and give his manager compelling reasons to trust him from the opening whistle. For Maresca, the challenge is equally important: ensure that his selection decisions help Manchester City perform as a complete team rather than simply assembling their most talented individuals.
