Manchester United supporters could receive some encouraging news following Matheus Cunha’s controversial red card against AS Roma, with growing discussions surrounding the possibility of the Brazilian forward having his dismissal reviewed.
Cunha was the hero of Manchester United’s incredible 3-2 comeback victory, but his unforgettable evening ended in disappointment after he received a second yellow card during the closing stages of the encounter.
The Brazilian forward produced one of his finest performances in a Manchester United shirt, scoring twice in just three minutes to transform a match that appeared to be slipping away from Michael Carrick’s side. However, his celebrations and subsequent challenge on an opposition player resulted in his dismissal, leaving United to defend their advantage with ten men.
The incident immediately generated debate among supporters, with many questioning whether the referee’s decision was too harsh considering the importance of Cunha’s contribution to the match.
United had entered the second half trailing Roma 2-0 after a disastrous opening 45 minutes. The visitors appeared comfortable, while Carrick’s players struggled to create meaningful opportunities.
Bruno Fernandes eventually reduced the deficit from the penalty spot before Cunha took centre stage with two decisive goals.
His first goal brought United level, while his second completed an extraordinary turnaround and sent Old Trafford into celebrations.
Unfortunately, the Brazilian’s evening ended with a dismissal that could have serious consequences for Manchester United’s upcoming European fixtures.
There have been suggestions that the club could examine the circumstances surrounding the sending-off. However, no official decision overturning the red card has been confirmed.
Manchester United would naturally prefer to have their Brazilian forward available for their next European assignment, particularly after demonstrating how important he can be in decisive moments.
Michael Carrick will also understand the importance of keeping Cunha in the squad. The forward possesses the technical ability, attacking intelligence and confidence needed to make a difference against difficult opposition.
His performance against Roma demonstrated that he can become one of the most influential players in United’s attacking department.
The situation is particularly frustrating because Cunha had worked extremely hard to help his team recover from a difficult position. Rather than accepting defeat, he continued fighting and eventually delivered the goals that changed the entire contest.
Manchester United supporters will therefore be hoping that any available disciplinary review produces a favourable outcome.
For now, the club must wait for the appropriate UEFA disciplinary process and any official announcement.
One thing is certain: Cunha has already given Manchester United supporters a night to remember. His two goals against Roma demonstrated his quality, while his dismissal provided an unfortunate ending to an otherwise magnificent performance.
United need him to maintain this level of football, and Carrick will be hoping that the Brazilian can avoid further disciplinary problems as the season progresses.
The biggest question now is whether Cunha will be available for Manchester United’s next European match.
